Try and match your riders to the race and drop your objectives right down if you haven't a rider capable of it. Then try and balance that by aiming higher in the races your team is more suited to. Remember, you should try and have one of your better riders in a race and some of the poorer ones to act as domestiques.
2. Energy gel makes the sprints + attacks last longer by making the red bar decrease more slowly (this only happens when the icon is flaming so time it correctly).
3. Not sure about this one :) sorry.
4. I'm guessing match strengths to weaknesses and ensure your contender is at peak fitness and has done the training camps (reconnoiter etc) for the race. Other than that it could be best man wins.
5. I believe there is a bug in the game with the breaks which they may fix soon hopefully. :)
for no.3..
Thank you, but I am still curious how the training itself works. What affects how much a rider progresses? Is there a certain correlation between training time, the number of stars, and how long it takes for a skill to increase? I assume somewhere around the age 30 athletes start to decrease as well, since Contador dropped an overall skill point in his 31st year.
2: No answer to that.
3: A high potential level of the rider and the reputation of your trainer will make skill increase faster or slower.
4: To beat Chris Froome you'll need 2 top climbers. One to make speed for the peloton, and one to follow. Eventually, Chris Froome will be so exhausted that he won't be able to follow, this is the time to attack him (works fine for me :)). To stay away from him when downhilling, you have to increase the intensivity of your rider, to 85, 90 or even 95. You can beat Chris Froome in time trail as well, especially when there is a mountain in it, and again: increase your riders intensivity when going uphill in the trial, this is the point where most riders lose a lot of time.
5: For a breakaway it's the best to use a non-important rider in your team, he's not important to catch. You'll have to make speed in the breakaway as well, but not all the time, let your breakawaymates do something as well. In long mountain stages the chance to stay away with the breakaway is very high because your enemies don't want to spend energy on chasing the breakaway.
LOL nice try :D
Trainer fame have no matter, only his stats. National trainer with SPR=8 will be better in sprint training than Mythic trainer with SPR=7.

Froome is a beast, You need some luck and perfectly use your advantages (Nibali: downhill).
