Sanity adding a HUGE difficulty boost to Don't Starve?
I just got off of a game of Don't Starve and I was doing pretty well for me as I ama a fairly new player to Don't Starve (Day 18 I believe, as that is my highest day).

I realized the new implementation of the brain (sanity) and I used a worm-hole. As I lost sanity by going in and out of the worm-hole, I died because the shadow creatures killed me as I lost much of my sanity from the worm-hole.

I do realize that adding sanity makes the game harder, but I feel that it makes the game a little too difficult for okay players like me. I'm not sure if everyone else feels this way, but I would like to see if other people are finding the sanity system a huge difficulty boost.

Failing to a mistake does not mean failing to progress!

There needs to be an option to enable/disable the sanity bar.

I've been playing willow for a couple of days, made it to day 22 with very casual gameplay. I only have a couple of hours a night to play after I get home from work. Came home to the insanity patch today, loaded it up and died on day 25. Only survived 3 days after the patch. I didn't use any wormholes, just played the game the same way I had played it to day 22. I agree with cornbread, there should be a toggle for insanity mode or casual gamers like myself are not going to have the time or dedication to continue playing. really bummed.

Hey Massic, what happened that killed you within 3 days? Did you go insane? Why did you go insane? We'd love to know so we can understand what's going on. That way we can make informed changes.

Some tips and such:

It's quite easy to die when you go through wormholes or the like, picking up some flowers is quite helpful to keep up your sanity, when you can, build a crockpot. Eating food from a crockpot restores 12 sanity, so the quicker you can get one, the easier it becomes. At night use torches or stand next to the campfire, the more you stray, the greater the sanity drain.

Each update changes the way you have to think about things, and that's why I like this game :L
Edit: added spoiler tag.

Like everyone else I'm still learning the specifics of Insanity. Here is what I've seen so far in the game maybe it will help you. Sorry if something is incorrect. Don't look if you want to learn on your own!

Good

Wearing a top hat and/or dapper vest
Being next to your fire pit
Eating cooked meat
Crock pot foods
Picking flowers restores 5 sanity each (i don't think they grow back naturally)

Bad

Eating petals
Being too far from your fire
Fighting monsters
Eating monster meat
Going in wormholes
Digging up graves

I haven't gone below 60 sanity yet because I have a top hat. I decided to start a new world in adventure mode after the update. I generally like to make a science machine, get a spear/logsuit, and take out a bunch of tier 1 spider dens as soon as I can, even before finding a location to build a base. This helps to make some areas safer and reduce the number of tier 3 and spider queens I will have to deal with. An even greater benefit is that I get a bunch of silk which can be used to make a very dapper top hat that helps restore sanity.

To add to the list (mostly taken from wiki + some personal experience):

flowers occasionally spawn butterflies, which can be planted if you catch them to spawn more flowers.

eating stale food also seems to decrease sanity
eating monster meat reduces sanity

I tested out low sanity on a new save and my god it's scary having those crawlers start to chase you and the hands that diminish your campfire if you don't stop them, farming for nightmare fuel sounds like a nice challenge though.

Just be more careful.
Its pretty easy to reduce sanity, just pick some flowers and eat good food.
Oh and I dont think Klei is going to add an option to disable/enable sanity. Its an awesome addition to the game and makes everything just more fun.

I think that sanity bar should down more slow

I didn't preorder Animal Crossing in Hell so I could go back and slog through Eternal Darkness or Amnesia. What's next, spawning with an incurable disease? I paid for Animal Crossing in Hell and that's what I want to play.

I can't bear to look.

here's some tips to make sanity go up

1:Sleep In Straw Roll Or Tent
2:Pickup Flowers Whenever You Can (Not Evil)

You can survive easy with these tips.

I had a little giggle at day 18 and the game being to hard..no offenece inteneted but it reminds me when all my games ended bewteen day 1-25...(something along the lines of grrrr everything 2 hard)

There is a learning curve but once you know(and learn for youself) the game's driving factor's
your game time is spent managing them as well as exploation/house building/dancing with beefaloo..Anything you do that is not needed to survive

The "driving factors" are Sanity, Hunger, winter and darkness..
Those 4 things i try and pay more attation too and try and be as prepaired as i can to maintain a good level and also deal with a probblem if its level drops..

In the case of sanity it looks like every wiki post related to it is here. but what i do if im not maxwell to maintain sainty is make the flower hat as quick as possible. i will continue 2 pick flowers as needed and make a bed roll for quick recovery if needed.Making a top hat or other sainty boosting hat can really help maintain it

But like all the monsters in the game you can kill the shadows easy, by slighty steping to the side while it attacks then attacking yourself while it recovers..
Killing it also gives you a sanity boost.

Now when my santy is low i ask myself two questions
"Do i need nightmare fuel"( the answer is allways yes)
"Am i in a safe place of other mosters..(dodging jumping spiders is probbly not the best idea while fighting shadows...aswell as hitting a beefalo by mistake)

I hope something here has helped
I have a few 150+ day characters now, and dont see myself dieing unless i desirve it.
And thats a very diffrent feeling to when i struggeled to make it to day 10-20-30 and the game seemed very hard, with to much to do

Don't Starve is challenging but that's why I like it.

It's sad what's becoming of gaming, bad players can't handle a challenge so they use work/school as an excuse and call themselves casual.

What ever happened to the days when we just told people like this to stop sucking?
