Raise the roof?
I can build walls, but I'm curious. How do I build a roof for my structure? Do I need a different science machine? Or, if I can't, what buildings can I build that have a roof?

There are no roofs.

Any tips then for anything like a proper home? I saw tents, but is that currnetly the only option?

Best bet is to build in the caves. The earth can be both your floor and your roof.

Thank you all for the advice. I'm still pretty new to the game, so every tip helps. And, thank you or the house mods. Nabbed em up.

Walls are pretty much useless outside of containing neutral mobs like rabbits. I never bother with them

I got mauled by those hell hounds. So I'm still gonna try some form of them. So far, I've got a nice little setup going I don't want to lose.

Once you get more used to fighting the hounds, there are other maybe better strategies like placing a pig village near your base or leading them to various other mobs to fight for you, but something I've used before is a multi-room group of walls with a lot of tooth traps. Or bee bombs. And make the entrances stick out a little so you can catch them good with tooth traps on both sides of the main entrances as well as the middle part if you need to

I've just done two rooms, but you could do three to be extra safe. Something like this.. with tooth traps on both sides of each doorway

EDIT: My little ascii art example failed and I don't have one in my current game. Just make a tight entrance to a room and put tooth traps on both sides. Then have the exit on the opposite side of that room go into another room. Then have the exit to THAT room go into a third, with an exit. Put tooth traps on both sides of each doorway. A lot of the time they will only come in one side and then they have to make it through the gauntlet if you lead them right. But even if they come in both sides, you hang out in the middle ready to kill if a couple get through, but most likely the several fields of traps will get them before they even get there.
