How do you fight the ents? (walking trees)
I tried fire and that didn't work.

You would think it would work (fire), but I always have some pinecones on me. When the ents appear I start planting some in his sight. Eventually he calms down and goes back to being a regular (well somewhat magical) tree...

An easy way to kill tree guardianas is with beffalo or pigs, also you could do the easy hit and run

Thats strange, I always plant a cone for every tree I cut, so the number remains the same. I try to concentrate on the stage-3 trees so I get extras to use for growing charcoal trees though.

ice staff to freeze them... takes a few shots to freeze them but once it does you get a opening to beat the crap out of them.. It's 4 charges if memory is right since I hadn't played in awhile... If you can't craft a ice staff though only thing I would suggest is lure it to pigs/beefalo or use the tried and true hit and run method.

The best way to kill them is to use hit-and-run strategies. Get just close enough for them to swipe, run away to juke the swipe, run back in and hit them 3 or 4 times (4 if you have perfect timing, else 3), then run away again since they'll swipe you if you don't.

The community calls this attack strategy kiting. It is by far the easiest to do on Treeguards, so it would behoove you to learn this strategy on them first.

If you get them to walk over a campfire, they catch fire (thats what I normally do).
Just keep kiting...

Play as Woody. When cursed, keep wailing on it and make sure to have some cooked berries in quick slot to chug down when HP starts getting low. Very satisfying.

I can confirm the hit and run method with an axe does work. Felled my first ent today.

The treeguards are not that hard to kill. Make sure you have a log suit on in case it hits you but it's attacks are slow and really easy to dodge. After it swings walk up to it, strike 3 times with your spear, back off and repeat. It takes a little bit of time but nothing crazy. If it comes at night just dance around your campfire and dodge the attacks until it becomes day then finish it off.
