Can we please ignore all these people who haven't played the game?
If your user name doesn't have a mouse icon next to it, it means you don't own the game on Steam...

Yes, I know hating a game you haven't played is practically a staple in gaming by now, but serious, some of you guys have been posting for HOURS non-stop!

Half of the gamers I know are LAUGHING at you, the other is just saddened by seeing how out of control and futile this is....

You don't like "art games"? Fine, then DON'T buy it, but don't come to the forum and tell everybody not to buy it too! Seriously, it's pathetic to see how many people who think this game is WarZ all over, specially when none of them have played it!

Do you really think people are stupid enough to buy this game if they don't like art games? WHY?! And please stop discussing on what a game is, because that's as futile as having a debate on religion, it's an abstract concept! And no, don't discuss whether it really one or not.

This is futile, this is not discussion or debate. This is a bloody Monty Python sketch!

PS: The whole "Doom meets Brain Eno" thing? Google Brain Eno, K?
PSS: Don't call the "haters" COD-kiddies, you know it upsets them and will only make them post longer.
PSSS: By pure Murphology I wouldn't be surprised that the "haters" got tired or posting in this forum.

Sorry if I fueled the flames. I should know better than to argue with people.

Normally haters stop posting when others stop replying, so this is all good advice. Also insulting them directly just makes it worse. Besides, insulting someone on the internet makes your penis shrink.

If you're stressed by the posts then go play some Proteus! It is the ultimate stress relief :)

Have to agree here, if anything the music in Proteus reminded mostly of this newer artist ( I believe he used to be in Godspeed! as well)

People who enjoy the music in Proteus will probably really like this, as well.

Feels like Dear Esther all over again, people feel ripped off because the experience they have isn't what they were lead to believe. (If they manage to even buy the game first.)

Do your research. Understand that this isn't a traditional game; it's graphics are uniquely low quality, your world seems largely non-interactive, and there may not be a whole lot to do; in a 'traditional gaming' sense.
If you think $10 is too much for an indie art game, so be it. If you've read reviews, descriptions, seen videos and don't feel $10 justifies the sort of game this is, don't buy it.

Everyone else can enjoy this slow paced immersive piece of art if they please. I know I did. :)

Being one of the active posters, I remember when this same thing happened with Dear Esther and which is pretty common on Greenlight submissions. It's depressing, and I feel like I should ask everyone this: What happens when the population who is typical to react badly to games like this overwhelms the people who do? You all have to recognize that we are a minority in a niche, and I dunno about you, but I don't like being the minority all the time.

I also wonder if anyone else is feeling like the little guy who gets sand kicked in their face every time this situation occurrs on Steam or otherwise.

A game with no gameplay doesn't immediately become "art". If you purchase this, you are gullible. This kind of experience just screams 'pretentious'.

It's trying to fool people into thinking it's deeper than it really is. I think the biggest issue is the $8.99 price tag for an 'experience' you could get many places for free (including on Google search, or exploring your back yard with some ear buds).

Also, you're right. I won't like being brushed off as a "Call of Duty" kiddie because I don't play Call of Duty. I can often appreciate games which try to be artistic, but this one is just sloppy. You guys should check out some of the indie PSN titles which are about the same price...

Check your backyard priviledge.

I don't think the people who enjoy these kind of games are in the minority necessarily, at least I hope not. I think it's just a case of message boards being a magnet for people's frustration at not being willing to partake in something other people are really enjoying.

That fire seems to have luckily died down now that more people who have actually played the game are coming around to voice what they saw or got out of the experience.

On the forums here we are not the minority, and have no need to think so defensively. There are only a couple of persistent posters making comments against the game, and they will stop posting soon enough I imagine. In particular those that have not played the game should be simply ignored if they're not being reasonable.

There will be the odd voice that legitimately says they have not enjoyed the game. This is to be expected - no game is universally liked. Some people will buy this with false expectations, and that's not necessarily their fault. There's no point getting upset by this or making presumptions about them. They are not all Call of Duty players come to invade an indie title.

Hmm, CoD multiplayer on Proteus... how wrong would that look? ;-P
CueZero Jan 31, 2013 @ 6:40am
Well I suppose anything is possible with modding, but I'd rather not go there with Proteus.

If I like this kind of game, and I've played other games like it (I'm thinking primarily of Ian Bogost's "A Slow Year"), and I played the IGF build when it was released for free, how exactly am I gullible?

And why should we listen to a pirate anyway?

I think, from the comments I've read, there definitely is a group of people who enjoy games where they can just explore the environment and relax. I have enjoyed such games in the past. I think the problem with this one in particular is that its being advertised as something it really isn't on the Store Page, and it's not worth $8.99. For that price, you can get a more immersive and longer experience at a cinema.

You don't have to listen to me. I think the current discussion/controversy on the subject of this game is pretty healthy, though. Perhaps some potential customers will look into Proteus a little more than they would have, and be completely sure of what they're buying.

I didn't notice the mouse button icon lol, im blind
CueZero Jan 31, 2013 @ 7:00am
I wasn't sure that's what the mouse icon meant either, it actually helps alot. Now we can sift out the chumps from the actual players!
