Proteus 2
Discuss what the developer might do to improve this game not only for graphics but also game play. Proteus 2 should be a leap forward

Proteus looks like a 1980’s game. The simplicity gives it an abstracted look. It might have been nice to see this world in today's 3D environments. If the developer used today’s graphics imagine how this game would look. I don’t think it needs a makeover maybe some improvements. Like more to do within the island.

I think it was meant to be more abstract

yeah i agree, but it would look great with updated graphics.

What I WOULD want to see is a bigger world, more random events, like that PS1 game LSD simulator (look it up, I promise you will be like WTF) where you never know WHAT you will find.

I really dont think the graphics should be changed, not too much at least. Maybe shading effects, bloom, bluring, etc.

It just seems more surreal the way it is.

Better graphics sure, but maybe more of a world story, things to find and connect into a cohesive narrative if you wish to put the effort into it, some unique events like seeing a meteorite near the end of one season but finding the crash site in another. Maybe even a God mode allowing you to set season, time and world characteristics as you wish, lots of potential here.

Yeah those are great ideas. Maybe have more weather that affects the game. I like when you the player enters the circle of stones and the days start going faster. Maybe add something to that also. what would be cool if the player could stop time as well to better observe the world.

I would definatley be interested in a Proteus2 as I have relly enjoyed Proteus. I really liked the simple purity of the "just look around and find stuff, explore" approach.

I would definately be hoping for improved graphics.

Also, more vareity regarding creatures & plants. It's one thing to have the landscape procedually created but when it's always poulated with the same stuff, it soon gets repetative.

What if a procedual aspect was added to the flora and fauna? Could make for a truly unique world every time.

Perhaps some randomly generated objectives. But nothing as simple and as straight forward as "You must go here to perform task A,B,C". Things that you would have to figure out yourself, and similar in nature to how your interactions can affect your surroundings in the first game. Just with a bit of added purpose. Something to drive you to explore, and reach a final end of sorts.

It's hard to get across, As PROTEUS is more than a little out there. So any additions shouldn't be so common in regards to traditional gaming. And should keep with the whole feel of the world it exists in.

The graphics don't bother me so much, but the way in which the game runs does not really inspire that much repeated play, except the want for the experience. Which is solid enough for what it is. But it would be nice to have something to do whilst you're visiting.

Multiplayer might be nice too. With features to accomodate MP "missions" ????? "/ But not too many players per island. 3 or maybe 4 max..... Perhaps.

A shared experience between people? I am still on the fence about graphic upgrades. Maybe just a SLIGHT one. It seems more sureal this way. MORE random critters and events would be nice. Starbound generates critters based on the planet's biomes, with different parts giving different traits. Different game style, I know, but it is the idea of it that could work. Maybe underground locations? I would love to explore a cave, with yet another new set of critters and odd locations (find evidence of a lost civilization underground, raising more questions). Add jumping too.. not for platforming, but just for fun. Nothing that can hurt you.. maybe some things that can scare you, that may chase you, but maybe if it catches you the screen blurs, blacks out, and then it resumes, raising more questions, once again (was that a dream? All in my head?)
I guess I am saying, more mystery.

Remove from Skyrim all the enemies, create landscape generator and it be Proteus II.
:)

This is a little long but I have a lot of ideas because I like this game.

Game play:
I like the minimalistic approach to game play, the lack of jump, or use keys, makes you to run around and watch things, instead of just clicking on stuff.

I think games should always have a way to bind, any action, to any key.
(Because, I normally walk with my right-mouse-button and shoot with my left-mouse-button.)

I think there should be an “endless” mode, that doesn’t end at winter, but instead goes back around to spring, when you activate the stone circle again.

And I think a list of all the different plants and animals you have seen would be cool. It could have the name, a picture, and the sound. And, what seasonal and day/night differences there are.

Also, I am curious if there is a point to the “sit” function (space bar) because I haven’t found one.

Graphics:
The way the colors shift and change is wonderful. I think no mater what the style, or level of detail; the slow subtle shift should remain the same.

I think a lot of hard work went into making the sunlight look so natural, and I don’t know if there would be problems with lag, if things like more complex objects, or shadows, needed to be rendered.

I like the sky and the satellites that travel across it, and the “Milky Way.”
It would be cool to have a constellation option, like if you looked at the same spot long enough a shadowy picture would appear.

Animals:
I would like to see more animals. There are already 12 types that I have counted (including the singing flowers).
I would love to see fish, and more birds, like seagulls, sparrows, jays, and hawks.
Other possibilities include, rabbits, mice, lizards, snakes, butterflies, grasshoppers, opossums, raccoons, foxes, deer, sheep, and goats.

And, I think the animals should interact with each other, or their surroundings.
Like if the birds moved under a tree to forage, or if the frogs sought each other out.
Or, if two singing flowers popped up next to each other their song would change.

Events:
I would like to see events in seasons other than fall, and at times other than night. Perhaps it is part of the subtle story line that the events only happen this way, but I find myself skipping right to fall to play with them.

Also, more events that lead into each other would be cool, like when the “bird-man” leads you to the big tree (that is my favorite thing to do).

And, perhaps Events that take longer to activate (like 30 to 60 seconds) that way if you rush, you miss them.

Places:
Different places, or types of islands, would add another layer to the game; each would have its own set of creatures, events, and sounds.

Like: rainforest, pine forest, caves, desert, savannah or grassland, in and under water (ocean, lake, and or river) and the original mountains.

Perhaps it could even be a random set of two types like mountains and grassland and you could choose what types are “on” or “off” in the menu.

And, if you got the same two together, there could be an extra, exclusive, animal or event.

You should have the ability to run, jump, swim and make sounds when you run around with other people. In other words it should be a Co-op online, not a MMO because thats an overwhelming amount of music depending on the people around you. It's difficult to explain just right but I really enjoy Proteus and I would like to see that I can join with other people and have certain noises rather than playing alone.

this game is what it is. if you'd like to play something other than what is it, you should play a different game. Just Cause 2 has good graphics and a world in which you can walk, run, jump, fly, drive, swim and parachute

This thread covers possible ideas for a sequel, all games change and evolve with future iterations. Discounting change in the name of preserving the core experience is like saying there should be no daylight because everyone is fine with the night, how then would anyone experience daytime and what it has to offer without trying something new?
