Addition of multiplayer?
Cprince and any other Puppy Games guys, how feasable is a multiplayer mode/dlc/new similar game? This game seems perfect for a sort of multiplayer arena mode or other. Thoughts?

Absolutely non-trivial, and requires a complete ground-up rewrite. As it happens we were working on a multiplayer game late last year but it's been paused while we make our droid warfare simulator.

Hmm, interesting. If/when you finish that miltiplayer game, I will most likely buy it. You guys put together great games, and are very active in the comunity. Any info on what the basic theme of that multiplayer game is? Still retro? (Retro is fine, you do a great job with that.)

Don't really know yet... as usual we evolve the style, and so on, but actually what the game is going to be about and how you play it is a bit of a mystery. We were toying with some sort of cross between Terraria and Soldat, played in an overhead way like Droid Assault.

Sounds great, looking forward to it! Keep up the great work!

An overhead shooter in this faux retro style would basically be amazing.

sounds awesome.....

When you say it's non-trivial and unrealistic, do you mean for any form of multiplayer? Including local/online co-op which would simply give other people control over one of your many robots instead of the AI?

It turns out multiplayer is a ground-up design factor. Don't listen to devs who say, "And then I just added multiplayer and it was great" because what they then don't go on to mention was that it was, in fact, ♥♥♥♥, with numerous problems including lag, dropouts, connection issues, server issues, prediction issues, problems with firewalls, etc, etc, etc.

We spent 3 months making the framework for a multiplayer realtime game; we got two guys running around a scrolly map shooting each other. There's no way we can retrofit that under Droid Assault, but, we are definitely going to use the code to make some sort of kickass Terraria-beater :)

Oh, I have heard that multiplayer is not something that you can just add-on, but I thought the difficulty came with networking so I was still hopeful for at least local multiplayer. But yea, I can see why this isn't realistic. Thanks for the quick replies!

Local multiplayer would still be pretty radical :)

Two players on the same screen might well be fun...

Anymore info on this project? Was this the 'Battledroid' game you mentioned on the blog a few months ago?

No, Battledroid is a free-to-play asynchronous MMO which we're hopefully going to Kickstart in November. The multiplayer game we're talking about here was codenamed Steampunks and involves realtime shooting and so on. That will probably come after Battledroid, assuming Battledroid fails to earn us any money. Which would be par for the course.

Thanks for the info. Hope the Kickstarter works out for you -- perhaps you can offer copies of your current games in the various tiers as incentives.

We certainly will.
