Twin Stick?

I bought this game with a bundle, but I haven't played it yet... looking at the reviews for it, a lot of people call it a 'twin stick' game, but I have no idea what that means unless it means I need a controller to play it. Is it playable on keyboard or is it one of those games I have where a controller is almost necessary to play it, especially at harder difficulties?

"Twin stick" does refer to controllers. But I expect that people who play Ultratron with controllers don't get far in the game. Keyboard and mouse is much better.
