So I watched the (wonderful) movie that inspired this (wonderful) game...
...and I can't help but wonder: Why isn't there a scorpion or shark mask?

(The movie is named Drive, for the unaware)

A shark would be a nice touch, but most scorpion breeds lack a distinctive head or facial structure (Or at least most people wouldn't instantly know or notice a scorpion's face on a mask). The letterman jacket is the biggest homage to Drive along with the brilliant electronic soundrack, and aside from either cloning locations or naming characters after those in the film I'd say there has to be a cut-off point somewhere with in-game references. Doing otherwise would slowly turn it into 'Drive: The Game', and Hotline Miami is wonderfully unique while also nodding to classic 80's movies, TV shows and also recent inspirations such as Drive.

P.S., if you haven't seen this movie, go and see it.

Are you referencing the Ryan Gosling movie? Because god damn that film was awful! felt like I'd wasted a couple of hours of my life I wasn't getting back. I can see the inspirations the game took, but I'm glad that unlike the film, the game is amazing!

I'll bite. Why didn't you like it?

The plot felt very... messy, I'm not a fan of Ryan Goslings acting at the best of times, and I understand the character is supposed to be the strong silent type, but he had pretty much zero personality, not only that, but it just felt like he was "going through the motions", the character seemed to have almost no motivation to be doing what he was doing. Maybe it was the plot that was just paper-thin, or maybe with a better actor it would have worked, but really, it just didnt do it for me.

Thank you for sharing a valid opinion

Wait, you assumed I was trolling? God I hate that the internet has made us all such cynical B*stards. What was your take on the film then? :)

I can't speak for Ryan Gostling's overall acting, as this is the first film I've seen of him. That being said, I found him to personify the mysterious main character rather well - for example, you could see the stoic, cold look in his eyes when he threatened that guy with a tooth-stomping. We could argue the differences between "mysterious" and "no personality", but I felt that the driver did show plenty of personality through his actions and through the few words he uttered. I think his motivations were quite straight foward, what with this guy's (practically) family on the line. Remember when he mentions the story of the scorpion and the frog? I'll leave that up to you to research, but it explains his violent tendancies as being in his nature. Mysterious or poorly-written, I got a kick out of that. Same with the entire film.

I guess its a fine line and we fell on opposite sides of it then, but hey thats the risk you take when you write the strong silent type characters I suppose. Thanks for the input! :)

he's playing a sociopath...one with limited emotions (my interpretation), so I think he did well for what was required. but I have also liked him in his other indie movies, like Blue Valentine, Lars, Half Nelson, etc. He's less good in major Hollywood stuff.
