The immediate restarts cannot be understated as a good thing, because in 2013 it feels like the vast majority of developers large and small continue to get that one so badly wrong. Nobody wants to put up with sitting through minutes of unskippable cinematic caused by their failure, especially if they've seen it dozens of times before.

I generally abhor gratuitous violence, but the gameplay (and non-lifelike visuals) make up for that and so much more. The combat mechanics are very fun. Situationally the game can be challenging or a relaxing slaughter, without ever being too abusable, and never impossible unless you put yourself into a corner.
