Failed to Initialize D3DX
The game doesn't start for me. I got the error message saying "failed to initialize D3DX" everytime I attempt to start. Google search for remedy so far brings out nothing.

Anyone having similar issues? Please help me if you have a solution.

I'm not familiar with this error, but here are a few suggestions which may help:

- Install NET 4.0 if you haven't already

- Disable print spooler service:
Right-click taskbar -> Start Task Manager
Go to Services tab, sort by name and find Spooler service
Right click Spooler service > Stop service

- Install the redist app
Go into the game's directory (mine is): C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\hotline_miami go into the folder called redist and install the app inside.

- Run from steam library if you aren't already; launching from desktop shortcuts is known to incur problems.

After trying any of the aforementioned, be sure to restart your computer.

Hope this helps.

I just ran the .exe as admin and it worked :)

Last edit: I know I had messed up my %tmp% folder permissions. So this might be a clue...I restored read / write permissions on my Local\AppData folder for my user account, and now the game starts just fine. Hope this helps.

Well I hate to revive dead threads, but I had this problem too. Disabling the print spooler and re installing the redist app didnt do anything, and while I could run the exe from the steamapps folder it would crash after the intro mission. Then I tried running steam with administrator privileges, and BOOM it works perfectly now.

tl;dr run steam with administrator privileges
