Run out of Video Memory

I have the recommended hardware to run the game but everytime I try to load the game it shows a message "Your system has run out of video memory. Restart the game." I have tried multiple times to get to the main menu but it won't work. My system's CPU when running the game is only at about 50% so I don't know what the problem is. Please fix this error I really want to be able to play this game!

Well I restarted my computer today and once it booted back up I loaded Hotline Miami. It ran with out it telling me that I ran out of video memory. I turned surfaces off (because I got the message as well when I played the game before) and played through the prelude. When that was over the scorescreen did not show up and I got the surfaces error again. I had to abort the game. When I loaded it back up, I got the ran out of video memory error again and again. Can someone help me please?

Have you updated to Net 4.0? I have no idea whether this could fix it, but maybe worth a shot as it has fixed some other errors people are experiencing.

Yeah I'm having the same problems. I get the following error.

Trying to use non-existing surface."

Any idea what could fix the problem?

Same here, but im using a pretty old graphics card atm so i guess thats the problem

To fix the surface error in the beginning I want to the advanced part of the settings and turned surfaces off, but I still got the error at the end of the level even with surfaces off.

This game was a waste of money for me if they can't fix this problem.

I don't mean to Necro, but I seemed to get around the issue by starting the game minimized. Splash came up, switched to a different window, waited for the main menu music to start playing, then switched to the game. Seems like a silly fix, but it might work for some having this issue.

Hello, I am the creator of "Hotline Miami Plus!" a fan made patch that attempts to address issues in the original version. I can say from having seen the source code that this issue "Not enough video memory" is not directly caused by the amount of video memory, but by the game losing its handle to the drawing surface, which can be caused by changing video resolution, allowing a screensaver to start during gameplay, or other things. Please provide me with information regarding exactly what cicumstances under which you see this error. I will do my best to either resolve this, or integrate a solution in to my next patch.

Edit: I believe I can resolve this issue in my next patch. Keep an eye out on the main thread titled "Hotline Miami Plus!". I can offer no solution for the vanilla game as it locks itself into a loop of drawing "Your computer is out of video memory please restart" if it can't find the surface, and does not try to recover the surface.

Double Edit: I think I have fixed this issue. The fix will be included in any HM+ patch 0.1.07 or greater. As of this writing patch 0.1.07 has not been publicly released.

You don't need the patch with the latest version of the game. Just update your graphics driver and play Updated version, not Original :)

Uh yea, this is a pretty old thread, I think I hid the patches so nobody else could download them anymore since the new beta came out.
