How can anyone defend an 8-bit game released in 2012?

what do you have against 8 bit games? Not enough Call of Duty stepchildren to play?

It's 2012. Not putting enough effort in a game, leaving it with graphics from 80s is just bad

I wonder HOW people can like it

Because it's fun, and the aesthetic suits the atmosphere of the game. I thought it looked terrible from the screenshots as well but it really all fits in when you're playing the game. But I'm not here to sell a game to you, if the graphics put you off then don't play it.

Game looks great and has a superior soundtrack to just about every game this gen. Overall presentation wise, it's in the top 10.

OK, I see your point. Tried it already, but got repelled by outdated gameplay and switched off. Left Steam shortly thereafter to escape becoming TWD/HM lover (had a different account before, abandoned it).

There are a lot of video effects in this game that could not be made in the 80's The camera swaying, light effects. All the 8 bit sprites are intentional. This game is not like this because of lazyness. They could have used high resolution drawings, but they went with this by intention.

Outdated controls? With mouse aiming, and xbox360 pad support?

OK, but WHY? To simulate old style? I seriosly don't get devs/filmmakers who try to emulate something old

Well, yes. The 80's are back nowadays, just look around.
Games became so modern and huge in this generation, that the retro trend came in again.
Just like in clothing! Plus HM takes place in 1989, so it was definitely a design choice.

I think this game is a very interesting mix of modern and retro.
You have this pumping modern soundtrack with 80's visual design and modern gameplay. It's hard like old games, but not unfair like old, bad games, you have checkpoints, and it's easy to pick up.

I'm not a big fan of retro, but this game just found the balance between retro and modern.

The wisest words you can ever learn young one. Graphics don't make the game.

If you kids we're actually alive (or at least out of diapers) in the 80's, retro wouldn't interest you.
The 80's..... been there, done that, really wasn't that great.
We spent the time playing lame games, longing for the future when computers would be fast enough to do something good. It's like having ford pinto fro a while, then getting a corvette, why would you go back to driving the pinto?
