The general rule of thumb is: If a game is released on Steam and you want it enough to pay full price for it, buy it or even preorder it and play the crap out of it (that last part is optional). If you buy it and don't play it until there's a sale on it, you've wasted money. If you wait and buy it at full price a month or two later, there's a very high chance (or at least a much higher chance than a month or two before) it'll be going on sale soon. If you don't buy it immediately it's either because you couldn't afford it or you didn't want it enough; in either case you should wait for the price to drop anyway. If I'm ever unsure of a game, like I was with this and Faster Than Light, I err on the side of caution and wait for a sale.
And then even in the big sales it's possible to feel like you screwed yourself over; never ever buy a game which isn't in the featured sales until the very last day. I know a guy who saw Skyrim at something like 25% off on the first day of the Autumn sale and he bought it immediately. Three days later (or whatever it was), it was 50% off. And even then it was better than 75% off on Gamefly! Check Savy Gamer or another sale alert site regularly and you'll 'save loads of money' (except you won't because you'll probaby end up buying games just because they're cheap!).
Edit: There has been a lot of discussion around the internet about Valve and what their sales are doing to the value of games for this very reason. People suggested that their ludicrous sales have trained most people to wait for the inevitable price drop rather than buy at full price, you may have noticed the last two big sales haven't been as ridiculous as the ones before them, that could be a sign that Valve agree and want to put things right. However, no one told Amazon US because they've frequently got Steam-beating sales these days!
Don't be mad you fail at shopping bro.
I've paid more for games FAR LESS worthy than this title (TOWNS *cough hack cough*).
That's the nature of digital gaming, man. Chill.
