Keep crashing? Here is a fix that worked for me.
I really loved this game, and I want everyone else to be able to experience it. Once I upgraded from windows xp to windows 8 the game became unplayable, it would crash so often completing a single level was impossible. Here are some simple fixes that worked for me. My fix did not involve altering any game files.

First, if you are suddenly unable to run the game, or maybe it is the first time you are trying to run it, and it crashes at start up, go to your steam library, right click hotline miami, go to properties, click the upper tab that says “local files”, and finally click “verify integrity of game cache”.

Next, find the .exe of hotline miami. If you created a desktop shortcut that will work, if you didn't create a shortcut go to steam\steamapps\common\hotline_miami\hotlinemiami, right click it. If it is your desktop shortcut, follow this same procedure. First thing, right click and hit “run as administrator”. Now, go to properties, click the top tab “compatibility”, and under “compatibility mode”, check the box for “run this program in compatibility mode for:”, then set it to “Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

Done, very simple. This worked for me, and I hope it will work for you.

I had to use this fix up until the recent patch, too. For anyone experiencing lots of crashing due to sound issues I suggest the Hotline Miami Plus! fanpatch which addresses that and more.

So mine is still crashing at the beginning. Do you want us to run the program and as it is running change the compatibility mode? My error says says "error defining an external function" and occasionally a "Floating point division by zero" will pop up so I'm not sure if our errors are similar but I am running Windows 8.

I need help with Hotline Miami but I don't know what to do, every-time I try and load it up the background changes colour and then Hotline Miami logo pops up for a minute then a little window pops up saying "Would you like to change to the correct colour coding to 16-32 bit" something like that. After that the screen goes back to normal then another window pops up and says something about the background graphics card and like that but like 4-5 months ago it was working fine, do you know why?

That is strange. Try reinstalling your graphics drivers with the newest version maybe?

every time i right-click the desktop shortcut, it doesnt give me the option to run as administrator. what should i do?

the game was crashing right after the first screen (that about the save stuff). I´ve runned in compatibility mode (windows xp) and now it´s working, but a little bit slower.
If you cannot run as administrator by the shortcut in the desktop, go to library - right click hotline miami and properties. there go to local files and click on "browse local files".

Do the compatibility thing on hotline miami.exe and be happy!

Forget what I've said, now its crashing in the abstraction games screen...

Very sad...

Is it giving you "Unexpected game error" on the abstraction screen or actually showing a GM error dialog with some code and an error? Or is it straight up just exiting with no dialogs at all?

Of all the option you had to have the worst one. I know the older versions of HM had issues with dsound and windows 8, do you have windows 8? If so and there is any way to disable sound in HM then try that. If none of that was helpful, I don't blame you, there isn't much to work on so I'm running out of ideas already.

My windows is 7 and HM was running fine after the update, but suddenly the problem started to happen.

I don't remember exactly when, but I updated my video drivers recently. Maybe the newer version is the problem.

I will make the tests with the older and see if it works.

[UPDATE] : removed the new version and worked. could play by some minutes without problems.

newer driver version - (crashing)
actual version - (working fine)

Hope it can help those who have the same problem.

I assume you're talking about graphics drivers, if you could list the manufacturer and model of your graphics adapter that would help others with the same model. Good detective work on noticing it was the drivers, btw.

Tks crunchepillar.

My video card is a Intel HD Graphics (first generation). This video card is very simple and some games doesn't work with. FEZ is an example, it runs veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow (that's why I updated my video drivers, trying to get a better result).

Maybe the driver available here can help:

Good luck!

none of these work for me, the game just crahes as soon as the video player loading screen pops up.
