More Impressed the More I Play *spoilers*
It seems like every time I play through Hotline Miami I notice something new that I didn't notice before. Playing the game for the fifth time, realized that the developers are masters of subtlety. It's pretty common knowledge now (I think), that Jacket hallucinates half the game in a coma. What's interesting about it is that the game changes pretty drastically going from before the Biker fight to after it, and I somehow didn't notice it the first four times I went through the game.

Like the fact that Jacket's apartment changes. It gets a little neater, the girl starts sleeping in the bed next to him instead of on the couch, and all the scattered newspaper clippings just disappear. Other things I just feel stupid for not noticing, like the various masked assassins dead in a lot of missions, which would also explain why I found zero of the secret masks on my first two playthroughs.

Anyone else notice anything on subsequent plays that you didn't notice before?

I only got the game yesterday, but I completed it quickly. I have re-played a handful of chapters again.
I'm not certain about the timeframe of events, but I assume that Helmet/Biker kills Jacket in the confrontation. I still have to piece some other parts together.
I noticed the other hitmen too, obviously they also received the phonecalls but failed their missions. Here are a few examples:

  • Earl (Walrus) Mask, Chapter Two - Body tied up on a chair
  • Carl (Grasshopper) Mask, Chapter Eight
  • Jake (Snake) Mask, Chapter Ten
  • Not forgetting, Richter (Rat)...

I agree on the subtle details. I recently noticed on one mission you can pick up a pan filled with boiling water, as a weapon. Also, obtaining a fireaxe. Many small details are easily missed due to the fast & frantic nature of gameplay (I only managed to pick up one puzzle letter on my first playthrough, but did so by accident as I didn't know they existed).

Same thing on the puzzle pieces. Had to go through every mission a second time just to get those. They're kind of a hassle.

Thing is, Jacket never died in this story, he was put into a coma. It's just really hard to tell what exactly happened after he escaped from the hospital. He goes back into his apartment, but then... there's that static when he puts his jacket back on. Is anything that happens from there on reliable?

According to the brief public knowledge that there is about the sequel, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number suggests that Jacket's ending is the true one.

I thought both endings were true. Jacket wakes up and kills the people who killed his girl (or something). Biker goes and kills the true culprits. They went on separate paths, and someone had to put Jacket in a coma for him to have been in the hospital.

Richter put him in a coma. Who do you think you kill in the cell at the police station in Assault?
Biker's story is not canon. Although they both are true as you stated, its simply to show you the true meaning of the phone calls (if you obtain all of the letters that is). When Jacket "wakes up" in his apartment after being shot by Richter, he sees Richard for the last time and he tells him, "Looks like its only you and me left now..." and later, "Before we say goodbye, I'll let you in on a secret...What you do from here on won't serve any purpose. You will never see the whole picture and its all your own fault."

He's saying that by killing Biker, he prevented himself from finding the true masterminds. Killing the Russian Mob serves no purpose except for those over at 50 Blessings.

That makes a lot of sense, though it does sadden me that Biker served so little of a purpose as to just be a "what if" scenario. I wonder why they didn't just lock all of his missions behind the puzzle-pieces barrier, and take out the normal "f**k you" ending. Or merge it with the secret ending. The way it's presented in the game as it is makes Biker's run seem a lot more significant.

I'm one of the only people who got all the achievements. And you can get the nigel mask in the last chapter,in a cardboard box.

Not really. I'd say more than a few people have them all. Myself included.

Yeah,that was a joke. I didn't mean to boast or anything. :b

I know. But 0.5% is more than you think if you look at the overall sales of the game. Barely 300,000 copies had been sold just early this year and I doubt many more have purchased it since then. Its still relatively unknown.

If you like Hotline miami, you might like other games published by devolver, like Duke Nukem or shadow warrior.Did you get all the trading cards too?
Angry Mike Dec 12, 2013 @ 4:49pm
Of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be beating the game haha.

I like Duke Nukem. Haven't played it in awhile.

Ethan, can you please stop multi-posting? Just post once and edit. It is a little bit annoying since you're creating multiple pages of discussion when, well, there aren't.

I unlocked everything so, as far as I'm concerned, the game is 100%'d, achievements be blammed.

Okay, sorry. I'll delete some of my former comments.I just figured out you could edit, actually.Do you all think wrong number will be as good as hotline miami? It was originally supposed to be DLC I heard. And I completely understand.I was being more than a little annoying.

The sequel is guaranteed to be at least as good as the first game from what I've seen, I just hope it will be better. It was originally supposed to be DLC but given that Hotline Miami was already a short game, I don't think that fact will harm anything.
