Constatly compared to Drive annoys me!
Perhaps that is what the developers of the game said themselves, but even if they don`t realize it themselves, the original movie of this style was Taxi Driver, which -heavily- influenced Drive. Music style is closer to the movie Drive, but the action itself is just like in the final ultra-violence shootout of Taxi Driver! In Taxi Driver there even is a cut of straight-above camera angle to show the bodies/outcome of the shootout in style of Hotline Miami.

Why the issue annoys me is, that Taxi Driver was the original movie, and still way superior to Drive, so when compared to something let`s compare to the one where the original credits should be given!

Do you have any recommendation of movies that somewhat could be linked to Hotline Miami?
There are only three I can think of:
  • Taxi Driver,
  • Drive,
  • Hobo with a Shotgun.

Hm. There was a movie where this hitman used a cab drivers services to go to each of his hits. It got pretty intense, Kind of like hotline miami i guess.

"Rolling Thunder" has similar feeling in its violence as well. Not surprising, since it`s from the same author as Taxi Drive. It`s more of a revenge flick though, even though the main character feels isolated from the world around him.

David Lynch stuff! Lost Highway etc., not for the violence, but this totally surreal atmosphere and constant confusion. HM was never about violence for me anyway. Rather a piece of art, music and storytelling.

What does this have to do with the movie discussion.

you know this kinda bothered me too, cause the movie drive didn't even have that many action scenes. if the game was more akin to drive, there would be long unexplained pauses and a profuse amount of staring

i dont think drive was influenced by taxi driver, yes there similiar but i dont think Drive tried to be like taxi driver, and how does it annoy u people comparring it to drive? HM was influenced by drive it was even mentioned in the credits not taxi driver.

Drive and Taxi Driver share quite a few similaritys in story and tone. However they were two different storys over all.

I can see how Hotline Miami was influenced by Drive in tone. Thats as far as it goes though. As I don't remember Ryan Gosling killing everyone in sight like he's the Terminator. Or being a total (nearly) disconnected psychopath like Travis Bickle.

Maybe Travis Bickle is Jacket.
