IF you get the real alternate ending, They are a group of patriots "protecting" America. So they send guys to kill the members of the russian mob, since Russian was probably America's biggest enemy and threat at thetime.

If you want the real ending, play through Jacket's chapters again (prelude to chapter 15) but this time, keep an eye out for a small pixel on the floor of each chapter. These are puzzle pieces and there are sixteen to collect in total (one per level). The Rasmus the Owl mask adds a small glow that makes them easier to find. Once you pick up the piece, complete the floor without dying to save your progress. When you collect all 16 pieces, pause the game, select Puzzle, put the pieces in order, then replay the final chapter.

It explains one of the major theories for the normal ending of the game pretty well. But, really, you're supposed to find your own interpretation, and there are a lot of different ones accross the net.
The canon ending seems to be the second one, though.

Ok, but the means is not explained. So they call people and tell them to do things. And?? Why would anyone respond? Sure, the biker says something about the need for excitement during his first appearance, but it just doesn't fit the whole picture, with all the other assassins.

They're given death threats:

"Failure is not an option, we will be watching you."

"I'm just calling to tell you we have the tombstone you ordered done and ready to be delivered. With a little luck you should be getting it before the weekend!"

I think that theory about this coma, and that jacket is dead is false, I belive that game doesn't have real meaning with his ending, he was just seeking for revenge and in the end he got what he wanted. PS. My thoughts are comfirmed by HM2.

After finishing the game a second time, I can say that I think that the two janitors people are supposed to be the developers or something. They have little else to say other than "didn't you have fun", and that all the killing is pointless. Want more proof?

When the biker guy (Helmet?) is interrogating the first man, he says "You probably told me it was going to be exciting, well i'm bored". It implies that The Biker and Jacket are both complicit in what they are doing, much like you were complicit in buying the game on the grounds of "Its exciting".

When he is saying "I'm bored" it could mean that we, as gamers, become desensitised to the violence, get bored, and wait for the next ultra-violent hit. Furthermore, once we are told that the killing is for no reason (in the first ending at least), it means that as a player, youcan no longer justify that you just played through the hyper violent game on the grounds of "Well i wanted to know what happened next in the story.".

Its just the developers saying: Whats the point on making a story if its only about the violence anyway?

Still, one of my favourite games, I really wanna find more of the secrets :]

Most of you seem to be missing the hidden third ending which you must collect all the puzzle pieces and solve the puzzle to get.

Jacket and Biker both joined a nationalist group called "50 Blessings" you can see the pink papers announcing this in their first levels.

The 2 guys in the sewers are higher up members of this group and are threatening members in order to get them to kill the Russians.

The reason they are doing this is because they are extreme nationalists who hate the Russians with a passion (Remember this takes place during the cold war).
