I don't think the game deserves so many negative reviews, even though I understand their overall issues, Mercenary Kings' pros easily outweigh it's cons.
Mercenary Kings is a load of fun, highly polished with much more depth than it appears at first glance.
The level design works through missions in 1-2 levels per rank (there's 10 ranks), with enough variation to keep you entertained, yet enough repetition so you can learn the levels and enjoy the benefits of improving with experience.
The game rewards your patience with a highly satisfying control system that gets better as you do, and a very enjoyable mechanic where you unlock weapon parts to customise your arsenal. As you progress, rarer hidden parts become vital to unlocking the best weapons, which offers great replayability.
It's fair to say taht the game does get a bit samey at times, and some of the levels can feel like a chore to replay, but overall I found this effect rather minimal to my enjoyment.
I should also add that I bought this game on sale, and would feel more comfortable recommending it around the $10 price range, rather than the $20. Also, I think you will enjoy the game a lot more if you have friends to play it with. While the single player is great, I think the game shines at sharing your mix of weapons and working together to explore the map and bring down the bosses.
