This is a little long winded, and I know there are already threads that eventually manage to cover this, but I thought I would post one dedicated to the fix that I found, to hopefully save some users a lot of thread research. I hope this doesn't get taken down, as it took me a while to work out what I had to do to fix my issue.
After downloading and installing PAYDAY 2 for the first time, I found that steam would run "first time setup" thingy that it always runs with a new game, however after that, nothing. Nothing at all.
The reason for this crash was (is) that the version of PAYDAY that I downloaded does NOT support Intel graphics.
My laptop runs an AMD graphics card however it runs something called 'switchable graphics', meaning it only runs off the dedicated AMD card when it is running a graphic intensive program, and the rest of the time it runs off the onboard Intel 4600 HD graphics, which is the one that PAYDAY 2 detected.
After scouring the web and steam for fixes, I eventually came accross this fix. Simply open the link that is listed in what should show up first on the page, skip the ad after a few seconds, and extract the downloaded dll straight into your PAYDAY 2 folder, NOT any subfolder, just STRAIGHT INTO PAYDAY 2 FOLDER.http://forums.techgage.com/showthread.php?t=5052%22
