awesome game!
Just finished playing for like 6 hours for the day and I have to say, it's a lot of fun. I had some bad lobbies at the beginning with people kicking me out for no reason that I could see (maybe because I was level 1) but after that, I met a few awesome guys who showed me the basics. I have to say, it's really awesome.

Everyone has a different style. Some just wander around and then eventually get around to the objectives, some are in and out in 25 seconds (that was a crazy lobby! I guess that's a thing!) and some take every dollar in the area and fight it out for 20 minutes against the police. Awesome!

I did have one player who had dozens of bags of gold, clones of himself and unlimited turrets, but I just left that lobby. Pretty funny though.

Anyways, just wanted to say well done! I'm having a blast. Takes some getting used to, but when you do it's awesome.

What is this game like? Is it like a diablo version of GTA? Where you keep grinding for money?
MTsoul Dec 2, 2013 @ 12:07am
There is a bit of grinding to get to the current level cap, but its xp, not money.

As far as similar games go, its close to a L4D (non pvp) and Killing Floor.

Nothing like GTA/Diablo at all imho

But, what is the reason to keep doing it? Do you get to buy better equipment with more money?
MTsoul Dec 2, 2013 @ 12:29am
There is a level requirement for the weapons, and some equipment like c4 charges/power saw/full suit of armour are unlocked via buying skills. However, all weapons are unlocked by ~lvl 50.

You end up running a lot of heists to get mods for the weapons, things like silencers, scopes, grips, barrels. You add different mods to get more dmg, more stability, less visibility (for stealth) things like that.

You also customize your mask that you wear in heists to disguise yourself. Each different mask can be customized with a material (titanium, gold, blue chrome, etc) a pattern (spiderweb, scratches, various stuff) and a colour for the pattern (made of two colours, primary/secondary). There is an 'Unofficial Mask Thread' you could find on these forums to see the variations.

Both weapon and mask mods are drops from the end of a successful heist. You get shown 3 cards, pick one, and it can be any of those four groups, or bonus xp, or bonus money.

That is one reason to keep playing the heists. The other... for me, its a fun game. There are multiple ways to do each heist, and I think everyone starts out just shooting the hell out of anything that moves. As you level up and buy skills, you get access to skills that make the heists easier, and enable you to do them on higher difficulties. Pulling off the hardest heists as smoothly as possible with a team is, for me, very satisfying.

Yes and you get better skills/perks in 4 different skill trees.

Is there something to keep you playing forever?
E.g., in Diablo there is an eternal search for better gear.

Once you reach level 50, is there a reason to keep doing heists?
THM Dec 2, 2013 @ 3:28am
Level/Rank 50 is actually not that high. The max is 100. So in effect you are still relatively weak at level 50.

I think the fun of it is buying better weapons and the random mod and mask drops you get. To keep playing forever? Probably not. Then again I don't think you can play D3 forever either.

I keep playing because I like seeing how different people do, especially on the "Overkill" difficulty setting. And because it's fun to make cops' helmets fly off. I don't really go off on metafeatures such as leveling, unlocks and customization. Sometimes the game is too easy, but that really depends who you group up with. That's the reason why I don't often go with friends or with random level 100s but with low- and mid-skilled players on lower levels instead.

D3 is click on next target... hope your buffs an armour hold up...

Payday 2 sorta requires skill as well as abilities, which is why I compared it to L4D. You need to know how to play the different levels beyond just 'shoot the next thing'. I think thats why I still replay both of these games.

What is the use of money in this game? Like, why are you robbing banks for money?

there is two sorts of cash. spendable cash and offshore money. spendable cash you use on buying and modding guns, crafting masks and respeccing your skills. offshore is currently used to buy contracts only (the "normal" way would be to wait for them to appear on crime.net. but the heists appearing there as well as their difficulty is random, so you get quicker what you want if you buy them with offshore). there was a gambling feature which allowed you to use offshore to increase chances of unlocking items via card drops (at the end of heists you choose one of three cards; they activate/unlock guns, mods and masks to buy) but they removed it again as for now. safehouse customization should it ever appear will probably use up offshore money too.

money isnt really an issue or reason in this game to me. at some point you have your favorite skill setup, your favorite masks and your favorite guns. or at least i do. thats why i keep accumulating more money than i spend. Xp isnt much of an issue either too me, i will soon hit level 100 and there is no prestiging (its in planning though it seems) giving any proper reason to reset my level (you can do that in the main menu if you wish). i play for the game mechanics mostly.

You are not only robbing banks.. there's ton of different types of missions, robbing trains with high end weaponry, armored trucks, safes in retail stores, jewlery stores etc...

You make tons of money every Payday and a percentage of that money you get to spend and the rest goes to your offshore account. You use the spending money to upgrade/mod your weapons, buy new weapons, customize masks, and upgrade skills. The money in your offshore account can be used to buy Contracts aka missions to make even more money...

The gameplay is awesome...you will never regret the purchase. A lot of replayability due to the skill trees and tons of masks/weapons to unlock and customize.

there is only one train heist, and that train is stationary, holds a Team Fortress 2 turret (dunno if thats what you call "high end weaponry"), and you cant play that heist directly but have to hope that one of the safeboxes on the armored transport heists drop you the blueprint to get there.

you get new masks, rare items, you can customize dem masks, only thing that keeps you playing i guess, there isn't much variety of heists really, most of them are quick, smash and grab reskins of eachother
