Everquest 2 And Vanguard - Similarities and Differences?
Seeing as these are both SOE games, I've only lightly played Vanguard but I have played EQ2 quite a bit. I was wondering if anyone can say if this game ends up being similar to EQ2, and if so, what main differences are there in how it plays out?

So far they're similar, but I found that EQ2 is closer to WoW than Vanguard is. Vanguard is a bit more challenging and not so solo friendly with an open world and uninstanced dungeons.

When i first played Vanguard back in 2007 i thought it was EQ3 :P
Vanguard is not as big and not as developed as EQ2 but it has the best combat and craft system in the mmo world.
Vanguard is unique, there is so much to it.
The problem is that things are not handed to you, but if you are willing to make an effort, this game can easily be the king of mmos.
And addressing what the poster above said, Vanguard is VERY solo friendly, just like eq2 is.
You just have to make the effort and figure how to do things, and thats all the fun.

There's no zoning so the world definitely seems bigger. With all the expansions I'm sure EQ2 is technically a lot larger, but zoning seems to take away from that feeling.

Thereis no zoning in Vanguard, but there are chunks which are zoning hitches where the game loads the resources for each region you go into. Everytime you cross one, you're zoning.

Maybe the combat in Vanguard is better than EQ2 where you spam alot of buttons a fight, but Vanguards animations are very bad compared to EQ2. You never feel like you are hitting a mob with great force, it's almost like your blows looks lazy and obscure. Also the running and jumping are worse in vangaurd.

How odd, I feel exactly the opposite. I've not played a melee toon in EQ2, but the melee in Vanguard actually was so good that I've made it my main toon, which I've never done before. I tend to play Druids, or other casters.

Although I completely agree about the jumping and running. Clearly needs a revamp.

There is a major performance patch coming "soon" after which animations and such will be looked at. That being said, people complain about this or that but never in the proper forums or places that the devs of Vg can see to make a difference. Feedback is something that can make any game better as long as the devs see it. I doubt the devs read the steam forum here.

i'm surprised nobody mentioned the 3 continental factions vs eq2's 2, diplomacy, house construction on lots that exist in the world which aren't instanced, and ship building. i think the coolest thing about vg is the borderless worlds (no invisible walls). the animations are lackluster at times but not always, they're just not as flashy as the ones in eq2. i think the thing that eq2 has over vg, and just about every other mmo, is the overwhelming amount of lore that can be accessed in-game. as far as the sheer amount of land to be covered i'm sure eq2 has more only the areas mostly seem confined setting aside the larger areas that were introduced in the latest few expansions, but vg's world map is just massive in scale with no borders aside from the edges of the 3 maps. i haven't played vg for a while and the last time i did play the areas were still just the three continents, i don't know if more areas were added or if more flying areas are around either. i'll find out soon though, i'll be comming back to the game in the next couple months.

VG is adding content and a new area or two but not in the form of traditional expansions. The problem is there is a very small dev team to get things accomplished mainly due to EQNext's development demands, the small population is not helpful either and yet the small population is due to bugs and performance, which is finally getting better as the team works on things. It is worth looking at again and even more so soon as the performance update is completed

vanguard is basicly what eq used to be back in its glory days, the game plays similar but has been far less dumbed down and pussied up for noob players

Actually its better than EQ was back then, crafting and diplomacy level up just like adventuring
