Amazed by the AI of this game
Just tried the demo and I just wanted to say I'm floored by the artificial intelligence in this game. It reacts to your every move, shifts units around in an ingenious way, retreats to form new battle lines, and actively tries to seize supply lines, strategic positions and weak points.

I play Hearts of Iron 3 a lot already, but I find its AI, while impressive, sorely lacking in many areas, and so it's fantastic to finally (especially in this day and age where graphics seem to be all that matters to gamers) get to a strategy game that revolves around *strategy* -- ie, puzzling your way to victory, really *thinking* about what to do and how :) .

Haven't bought the game yet, but it's definitely on my "may buy" list! Good job!

The AI is definately mean. Leave a gap in hte line and suddenly you have a pile of angry nazi's sitting on your supply lines.

The AI is good at exploiting weaknesses, but it doesn't follow through it's breakthroughs with enough aggression. The AI still provides a challenge, which is a rarity these days.

The AI is brutal. It forces you to learn quickly.

Do yourself a favor and buy both the game and the Red Tide DLC. I assure you, you will not be let down. Once you conquer those campaigns you'll be asking for more.

yeah, Red Tide adds a lot of fun battles, and I felt the scenario design was better there

Here's an interview[www.armchairgeneral.com] at Armchair General with the developers about the way the AI is designed.

Essentially, the strengths and weaknesses of the AI comes from the limited time horizon:
  • AI can only think one turn ahead.
  • AI has excellent defensive and counteroffensive AI, which only requires tactical (i.e. single turn) thinking.
  • AI has terrible offensive AI, because it requires strategic (i.e. multiple turn) thinking.
