Wow! Crushed Stalingrad first time out (12 turns)
Every other campain stop I had to restart at least 3 times, but not Stalingrad. I must have been lucky, but I figured it out pretty quickly. All you need to do breakthrough a panzer plus one other unit anywhere west of Stalingrad. These units will get cut off pretty quickly, so keep opening up the breakthrough and keep airdropping them supplies each turn. Cut straight to the top of the map then hang a right. Before long, you will cut off supply routes and the Soviets will start to rot out. Even their reinforcements (the bain of this map) will have no place to land. You have to keep all soviet frontline units occupied so they can't chase you around the rear echelon, even if you need to sacrifice the italians and romainians to do so ;)

Another "go for the north" strategy. Damn you! (lol) Nice work on the 12 turn win!

Yeah, I thought it was going to be a titanic struggle as well, given the legendary reputation of the battle, but it was a complete cake-walk. The Wehrmacht initially didn't actually want to go for Stalingrad, and later on they didn't want to hold the city, but Adolf Hitler was adamant that the Wehrmacht capture the city that had Stalin's name to claim a propaganda victory.

That's vs the AI. Come try it in multiplayer. I played a battle recently as the Germans and tried to swing north, but was countered and suddenly the entire battle shifted to the north, with zero activity in the south or middle. Back and forth over the northern plains, the lines surged. Eventually I captured the supply points and he fell back to Stalingrad, but he put up stubborn resistance and rain slowed my pursuit. Came one turn short of victory.

did it in 7 turns by purchasing the GD unit. it's really not that bad if you don't let them overwhelm you with reinforcements.

That's true. The AI can only think one turn ahead (Interview with developers at Armchair General[www.armchairgeneral.com]).

I think there are two approaches: (1) Flank and capture supply, either North or South; or (2) Spearhead assault, driving North-East from the South-West and grinding down the enemy using superior Axis units.

Which one is the GD unit? (Does GD stand for Panzer Grenadiers?) Could you give a quick after action report (AAR)?

I have managed Stalingrad in 7 turns without using any prestige, link below to my replay.
