Don't engage in that giant mess in the center. Your armor is mostly on your flanks, whereas the enemy is not - use that to your advantage to get behind the enemy. If you're doing it right, a large body of the enemy force should be hamstrung to where you can either pick them off at your leisure or ignore them altogether.
If you're having problems with supply, make sure to use your theater ability wisely and to keep that southern rail line under control.
FOr the most parts units with helmets are your basic infantry, some are motorized infantry, which apparently can travel greater distances.
units with hats can be cavalry or mountain troops (jaeger in german) and other i guess other things. hope this helps a bit.
I was in the same boat.
It's a numbers game, but there is a necessity for tactics. Find a vulnerable enemy unit, penetrate the enemy lines with armored units, then exploit with cavalry or motorized troops.
Cutting supply is a MUST. I find myself analyzing supply lines more than the enemy. Once cut from supply, the enemy can only fire for one turn. After 3 turns they begin to lose strength. In some cases, isolating an enemy is the only way to destroy them.
Analyze your terrain. Attacking across a river is a bad idea and will almost always result in a negative outcome. Woods and cities also favor the defender. Use the zones of control, and attack with the lowest probable losses (sometimes you can only suppress, which will work)
Like I said, I was completely stuck on the first EASY mission. Now that I've learned the game mechanics, I'm on mission 14/17 on Red Turn and have only had issues with the first two missions.
You should take a look at Hearts of Iron, because this game reminds me so much of those Avalon Hill games (and others). If you buy Darkest Hour, you get HOI 2 complete as part of the package, and it is usually $4 during seasonal sales. I also like HOI 3, but I think Darkest Hour is the cheapest way to see if you like it.
