Old vs. New
I was a HUGE fan of the BIT.TRIP series, and still am to this day. One thing that's stopping me from getting BIT.TRIP Runner 2 is the artstyle. I honestly don't like the over-complicated sprites that could have been so much simpler than they were. I enjoyed the series because I was expecting a retro-new school mix, and that's what I got. Stunning visuals in the background, music that seems to change eras as you reach new levels of awesome fart trails, and, most importantly, keeping the game up to its name. BIT.TRIP. BIT .TRIP. Where are the bits?
Graphics (oh, joy!)
This may seem like a minor thing, but, really, making Commander Video pixelated was one of the best moves in video game history. In a time where we can replicate graphics to the point where they're almost scarily realistic (take Crysis 2, for instance), bringing back the retro feel to a game whilst still implementing more smooth, streamlined, and dare I say, realistic graphics. Just in the background, not the game itself.
Gameplay and Expectations
The gameplay between the two games hardly changes, jump over obstacles, duck under them, etc., except there's new actions, new obstacles, new mechanics... Yeah. I get it. Sometimes you just have to take a step forward, but if you're expecting BIT.TRIP and you get Super Mario Bros., the game will disappoint. It'll still be a good game, just not what you would expect. The similarities are, by all means, right in your face, but the game feel isn't the same. BIT. TRIP is a simple but entertaining game. That's enough to be said. That's pretty cool, but the major amounts of changes between both games makes BIT.TRIP Runner 2 feel a little bit (no pun intended) out of place. I only wish there was a different series for something so not BIT.TRIP
Thank you for reading this rant, although I seriously doubt this will be taken into consideration professionally. Either way, it would be nice to find people with similar feelings towards this somewhat touchy subject. I know the creators are just trying to "move up", but going mainstream just may not be the way to go.
