Sorry dude, this company believes in XBOX only controllers. I can't use my PS3 controller on it either, and I've tried - I have to jump with select, forget that mess. They had a similar issue they refused to address with Super Meat Boy. Either you get the XBox360 controller or you're not worth dealing with in their mind, which is too bad because they make awesome games and support Linux. But only if you use the XBOX controller.
wow that is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. thanks for the reply.

Never mind about Super Meat Boy, they're just friendly, not the same company, and now Super Meat Boy works with Steam where it didn't work from the Ubuntu Software Center. I still don't know why Gaijin insist on XBOX 360 controllers only, forget about Steams configuration. It's almost like Microsoft paid them off or something.

"The New Standard: XInput

XInput is now available for game development. This is the new input standard for both the Xbox 360 and Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later, and Windows Vista. The APIs are available through the DirectX SDK, and the driver is available on Windows Update and "

If you don't have a modern controller with xinput, you can use

Steams configuration menu should make things like the XInput library irrelevant. Also, the Steam configuration menu is cross platform.

The Steam client has nothing to do with the games it installs on your PC.

Right. But it does offer an out of game controller configuration option. This out of game controller option, which is respected by games such as Brutal Legend, Super Meat Boy and Beat Hazard but not Bit.Trip games would make such a thing as that library irrelevant. Considering not all of us use Windows.

I have this game and a Logitech controller running in Xinput mode (on Ubuntu 13.10 if anyone wants to know). It won't recognize that either even though the OS itself recognizes it as a Generic XBox Controller or something similar. If it works on Xinput and reports as an XBox 360 controller, how does the program tell the difference?
