Maybe, if you like spiderwebsoftware games... It's a bit different from his other two series being that it's ancient history based with magic, i.e. Romans and Celts...

beyond that wait for someone who owns the updated version to answer.

(He had an older game forget exactly when made but IIRC it was after a few of the later Exile re-makes using a version of that engine, and IIRC maybe BEFORE the geneforge games... it didn't do all that hot I guess(saleswise) but a few years ago he re-made it(getting a pattern here?) with a more updated engine... so dunno... I'm on the fence myself, as his CONSTANT re-makes have been old for almost a decade now... (I own the original Exile trilogy plus a few of his newer re-makes, and well... I feel like a gerbil on a treadmill...))

If you like old-school computer rpgs in the likeness of the baldur's gate, then you will enjoy this game. I'm 3 hours in and still on the first quest, maybe because I am a completionist when it comes to these types of games and enjoy searching every room and exploring the map. On top of that is on sale now for a cheap $9. You can't really go wrong with this.

You can choose either the Romans or the Celts to side with in the story, which you pick right at the start. I haven't gotten around to trying the Romans out, but the game explains that they are far superior fighters, but the Celts specialize in magic. I'm not sure if this plays out in what skills you can choose for your party, but I assume there might be some differences.

You can have a party of up to four members that you can finely-tune to fulfil whatever role you want the character to play in the party. Right now I got 2 fighters, one focusing on attack and the other on defense, and two magic-users, one a full on magic user, and the other has some skills to use ranged weapons.
The character creator is what you would expect, you have your regular strength, intl, dex etc. skills, skills focusing on weapons and combat skills, magic spells, and other abilites, such as potion-making, luck, and fairy lore.

A few things I dislike about this game so far is the UI. You have your game screen, party screen, and inv/map all on the screen at the same time, and it's a bit overwhelming at first. It's pretty minor, and I'll probably become more use to it as I get further in the game.

Overall, I'd say buy it. Like I said it's cheap, and if you're into this type of game you'll enjoy it.

I've just played my 1st 40 minutes or so, so I'm only dealing with my initial impressions...
It is certainly "low tech" when compared to other Games, but I don't mind that...
The UI does seem overwhelming at first as Airik mentioned, but the game is turn-based so you'll have the time to learn as you go.
The setting is intersting, not that History mixed with a bit of Magic is a completely original idea...but being able to play as each side seems like it will add to the amount of Playtime you get.
All in all, I'm not blown away by the Game but I'm not sorry I purchased it. It's an Old School style RPG and it makes a nice change from the RPG/FPS hybrids that are out there.

Weird. It's showing $3.99 for me.

Too bad it didn't get updated to the newer Avadon graphics engine, like Avernum.

I don't like the remake-remakes (Avadon and Escape from the Pit) very much, it's been a long time since I played the older Avernum games, but I remembered them being much less linear and more "old-school" in character generation than the new ones on steam.

Agreed. Not so much because of the (slightly) improved graphics, though. Rather, the UI is less clunky in the new engine, and, more importantly, the really annoying mouse stutter bug is fixed.

For $4? It's a steal. Although this is a "new release" on Steam, this game was originally released in 2008. Granted, the Spiderweb games have never been on the bleeding edge in terms of graphics, but I think the strength of the story and the basic mechanics are more than enough to cary this through. Nethergate has tons of detailed descriptions for items that explain the history behind items too, instead of "This is a dagger made of stone."

Spiderweb's game: awesome game./

While I might eventually buy this game, I'm amazed by the sloppy UI and low production values. I'm happily playing Geneforge 1 now, but Nethergate is a huge step back in those areas.

This is a amazingly underated game, and even without graphics if you like this sort of thing it is a blast. Completely worth your time and money

My advice? $5 for a game that'll last you for many, many, many hours unless you absolutely hate the genre is a great deal. Plus, if you're like me, it's one of the last Spiderweb Software games with the awesome hand-pixeled graphics.

If you have never played a spiderweb game before, I suggest playing either the geneforge saga or the avernum series first. Nethergate, while worth the price, is not the best spiderweb game available on steam.

Really? I've heard Nethergate to be Spiderweb's underrated gem.
