Pissed off startup

Thanks for pissing me off companies.

I'm in a good mood, want to play a game, so I click on Anna. I bought it a year ago, installed it, and am just now getting around to playing. I click on the game shortcut and what happens? Steam has to update for five minutes. Fine, I wait.

Can I play yet? No. Steam tells me the game has an activation code and I need to copy it. Fine.

Can I play yet? No. Now Anna needs to update for five minutes. ♥♥♥♥ this. I launch another game and play for a while. I alt-tab over to check on it.

Can I play yet? No. Now something else has to update. DirectX? I already have that, why are you updating? I alt-tab back to the other game and play some more. Eventually I check on the game again. Don't know what else was involved or how long they took but updates seem to be over.

Can I play yet? No. Now I have to pick Anna or Anna - Extended version. What's the difference? The launch window doesn't tell me, so I open my browser to read up on which is better. Don't care to read too much, so finally decide extended version may be better (good!) though apparently it's easier (bad!). Close browser and pick Extended.

Can I play yet? No. Now I have to enter the activation key. Forgot about that.

Can I play yet? No. Now I'm asked about my email. Email for what? Is this another Steam thing? There's no label on this popup so I don't know what this is. There's a huge ad in the middle for Patrician IV, so it looks like Steam, but there's some text in the bottom that says Kalypso. Who's Kalypso? Is Kalypso related to the game or are they just the developers of whatever software this is? Open my browser again and spend several minutes digging up a forum on Steam to find out what this is. Oh. Apparently Kalypso are the devs and they require me to register with them as well. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥! Now I go to the Kalypso website to see who they are and what they're like and what registering with them will require. Spend about 15 minutes looking over their site to see what their "fine print" entails. Am I going to have to buy ♥♥♥♥ if I register? How come their Anna page makes no mention of requiring email registration?? Watch a trailer for another Kalypso game where the trailer shows false gameplay and allegedly gives bad system specs. ♥♥♥♥ you Kalypso! FINE!! I go back and sign up an email. Fine. I go to my email, and confirm the activation email.

Can I play yet? No. A tiny game window comes up. Apparently it's set to 640x480, instead of fullscreen. So I close the window, realizing I'll have to find the setup file so I can adjust resolution. At this point I realize I don't want to play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game anymore and come on Steam to ♥♥♥♥♥ about it.

Oh look, my browser isn't logged in to Steam so I have to do that. Oh, Steam doesn't recognize the browser I've used every time I've ever logged in, so I have to go to my email again to get an authorization code to confirm I am who I say I am. But entering the code isn't enough, the popup demands I name my browser, "for my convenience". So I give it a name, and I still can't login. I click the submit button. Nothing. I click it again. Nothing. I click it twenty times in angry what-the-♥♥♥♥-happened-to-my-good-mood rage. It finally goes through.

I am now posting about what an enjoyable experience I have not had, not playing a game I legally paid for and own. THIS is why I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate DRM and all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ companies add on "for my convenience". ♥♥♥♥ YOU WORLD!!

Absolutely agree - this is an excellent way for a game company to start their customers off hating the game before they have even begun playing. Ridiculous.

Welcome to Steam, where every time you go to play a new game it installs several programs that you already have installed.

lol, yeah, got the humble bundle of Kalypso games and same thing with Tropico 4 being spammed by Kalypso at install and I guess starting the game. I added a local host line to my host file in Win8 and blocks Kalypso from spamming me when the game starts.

Totally agree. I like I've played two Kalypso games so far, and liked them both, but they got this stupid nonsense DRM obsession. It really spoils the fun sometimes.

I can't play it either. Mainly because that kalypso launcher is in some foreign language (looks like Japanese) and I can't understand any of it.

I can't play the game. After I choose Extended Edition, the game doesn't load, it stays in a black window. From several attempts, the game only loaded 1 time.

idk, when I upgraded to Win8 the first time it seemed I had a lot of issues getting Steam games running on my pc, then did some research and saw I had my ssd drive set to ide instead of AHCI in the computers bios. I changed the ssd and sata drives from ide to AHCI and reinstalled Win8 and now it seems I have no problem with the games. There are so many variables when it comes to software and hardware that can break things.

I waited an hour for it to install launch the game Anna or Anna-Extended Edition (what do you think the name of the thing is that i just launched?!) asks for a account (now i'm kinda hating the setup) register an account please give us your cd code (I don't bother to copy to clipboard because games never asked me till then) Me:♥♥♥♥... I go back and get the code after 20 minutes and i put it in.And Finally got to play my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game
