6/10: A reasonably fun game of strategy and violent sport. It wins a recommendation because of the diversity of teams in the Chaos Edition, the amusing (for a while, see below) commentary, and the satisfaction you gain from winning.
Having never played the tabletop game it is based on I cannot speak on this aspect.
However, the negatives I have make this a VERY BORDERLINE RECOMMENDATION. Most everything is won or lost on random dice rolls. The sheer probability balancing and number crunching involved in a truly deep strategy is more than I can be bothered to spend on such a game which still seems largely arbitrary. If you are anything like me you will end up save scumming matches that are especially important. Also, you are liable to end up cursing your time loudly and terribly as they appear to be the most inept incompetent sports players EVER, worse than England football teams in recent World Cup tournaments. Watch as these supposedly trained players, who should have more skill than a comatose amoeba even at the most basic levels, fails at such a simple task as picking up the ball. Which is a Turnover. Fails to catch a pass from a foot away. Turnover. Fails to quite run the distance without stacking it. Turnover. Even I am not that clumsy, and in the end you may well either rage quit or eventually develop a complete loathing and sarcastic relationship of hate with your team.
I play it occasionally, when the idea appeals and trumps my memories of actual gameplay. As a concept, it is great. As an experience it is stressful and lacking. I recommend it tentatively because I have enjoyed it on occasion, and you might too.
