This game sucks. 86/100 on metacritic???? It's a 65/100
Some scores/reviews are sometime incredibly unjust and hard, but this one is ridiculous.
The game is bland, without story, no AI, terrible gameplay, for a 4 hours game I couldn't do more than half of it and stop - never again.
It's rather disappointing all around - minus the graphics and the soundtrack.

It's remake of 80's classic and rather accurate one, which is not negligible and should be looked upon as a true remake by fans to the fans (even stated in the manual). I believe Streetfighter, Tekken or Dota you like offers you with better story in your opinion, but BCR in my eyes is easily 80+ / 100 among action-platformers, considering both timeless gameplay and audio-visual quality of the game. Controls are tight, story/plot is basically the same as back in the day and 80s vibe breathes from every single location...all along that grand soundtrack you hear oftentimes muffled in the background. When someone is attempting to remake a classic, I always point to the BC:R as golden standard showing how remakes should be done.

Game is not bland, it just has simple yet effective mechanics, which were set back in the day and I for one am glad that this version stays true to them, instead of some spoilt console-gen dumbing-down of last decade.

No AI? Clearly you have never played it on 'Super Hard' difficulty (can't blame you, it unlocks after finishing the game on 'Hard') ... I bet you went right on 'Easy'

P.S. I've seen quite a few threads here similar to yours and most of them were gone after OPs sobered up a little, realizing that it's not only the game here to blame. Shame you didn't like BC, but its not for everyone. However difference is what makes things interesting...
I also noticed that you have La-Mulana and I bet you will think how it sucks, especially if you decide to do a blind-playthrough. Anyway, you take care now!

This game is perfect remake of the old NES-classic. The graphics, music and gameplay are top notch. One of my all time favourites this one :)

The people who think this game sucks generally suck at it, in my experience anyway.

Take some time, learn the controls and soon you'll dig it.

(Oh, and if it's too short and easy: RAISE THE DIFFICULTY. Is that hard?)

This game is a good amped remake of the classic. BUT the music was horribly remade and remixed. The original NES music was fantastic and they changed way too much. Yes, they kept most of the melody but hey morphed it too much. I guess I am just a fan of the original version of its soundtrack since I grew up listening to that. Could have been better if they would have just used better versions of the same track instruments (VG site has great midi file versions of what could have been great for this version of the game) Other than that, the game is true to its original version.

The controls are absolutely horrible. It could be a great game, but I only keep playing because I paid money for it and it's frustrating.

It's one of the best HD remakes I've seen of any game. It's fun, it has actual difficulty, and it greatly the improved boss fights and equipment from the original. I will agree with above that it would have been perfect had they included an 'original soundtrack' option like Ducktales did. Only aggravation factor I can see is trying to play it without a pad; these old-school platformers are definitely not made with a keyboard in mind.

Yep, definitely don't agree with the OP. Could be because I played the snot out of the NES game as a kid... Bias? probably :P

The controls are fine. It takes effort to get better. The game is legitimately challenging.

I'm having tons of fun with it and i've never even played the originals. The simple fact that you can't jump makes everything so more interesting.

What, because of not being overly concerned with story in a 2D platformer? Really?

No, for using idiotic hyperbole like "If I want story I'll go to a library". What a myopic, ignorant statement about the nature of story telling and your limited preconception of where it is appropriate.

I don't mind the lack of story in this game myself, as it is a throwback to classic 80's arcade games. But I don't think its wrong to want something better. Or thinking that "2D platformers" can't have a good one.

Did you not feel a bit pretentious and tossy while you were typing the quoted comment?

Meh, it was quite obvious that, as colourfully expressed as it was, the guy above was giving this game a free pass, as you acknowledge is reasonable.

Seems likely it was obvious to you as well, which would make your outburst surprising.
