is there a best way to win?
I'm quite new to the game, and i'm looking for the smartest way to play the game. Does every way you play (economical, magical or with a great army) have as much chance to win?

Unless you are playing on a small map I'd say Spell of Mastery is the easiest way to win.

Don't even bother with Epic Quest. If you can beat the Epic Quest, you can easily win with any other game mode.

Research the commerce tree and get Trade so that you can get your gildar up and running.

Before you end your first turn, cast meditation on your first city if you have it. Be aware of spells you can use or that can be used against you.

You can send out an archer + mage unit and easily nuke most monsters because they can't respond to magic.

Use your archers against enemy mages, then use mages against enemy "tank" monsters.

Auto resolve can do 2 things: Make you lose battles you should win, and make you win battles you should hopelessly lose. Learn when it will which.

Visit the Stardock forums for Fallen Enchantress and ask questions. The developers, Kael and Frogboy are pretty active and some good modders like Heavenfall are able to help out too.

If that's true then you are not playing on the higher difficulties where the enemy will field armies that can defeat the epic quest.

You have to have a strong army just to fend off attacks. Spell mastery is definately the easiest as you get to be completely defensive. The ultimate quest isn't as difficult as conquest and conquest is typically the hardest. I've never tried any other victory so I can't comment. But I tend to play games on expert+

Otherwise the AI doesn't even threaten me in the least ways. I typically play offline so my game time isn't shown accurately.

BTW diplomacy victory is almost impossible because the lunatic AI behavior in diplomacy. Apparent v1.3 fixed/improved diplomacy alot but I haven't played the new version enough to comment on it yet.

If your power is high enough over the AI they will start sending you money in hopes you don't roflstomp them. I love it!

also, are the basic characters well balanced or is it better to create your own faction and sovereign?

The reason there is 8 characters and a game at all is that they each have strenghts and weaknesses. The trick is for you to learn them, play yours and exploit theirs.

Epic quest wins feel anti-climactic so now I turn off that option. You get some real nice rewards and no chance to use them.

For those that haven't tried a beastmaster, give it a try. It will have to be a custom character. Some of the beasts that can be tamed are quite powerful. I've won games with beasts and heroes alone.
