game does not launch from steam
Every since I got this game, other than the first couple of times, the game has refused to run when launched through steam. The game .exe file runs, and then nothing happens. I have to manually go into task manager and stop the exe file so I could try to re-launch it, otherwise I get an error saying the file is already running. I did all the suggestions listed on steam, checked file integrity, deleted and re-installed etc. nada. I tried contacting steam support, and waited weeks for a response. I went to stardock forums, and got immediate response: stop running it through steam, the game doesn't need it. Problem solved. Weeks later I received a very un-useful response from steam, I went through their suggestions and it didn't help. I'm not really sure why it won't run through steam and runs fine without it. What really got me annoyed was Steam's horrible customer support however, and really wanted to post that. I've never had issues running games through here before, so I've never had to use their customer service, but it's the sort of experience that now makes me want to buy games direct from the store again. I'm lucky this game ran without steam this time, if it didn't I'd be out my money and have no playable game. Unacceptable!

This is why steam games are so cheap when they are on sale. If the game has no demo, you risk a completely unplayable nonrefundable experience. Also check the BBB website for Valve, and they have an "F" grade for selling games that don't work. I.e. we keep them alive by buying their games even though they suck - no surprises here. Don't bother complaining, they won't ever change.

another way of looking at it - the buyer is responsible for finding a hardware platform that runs the game correctly. Most of the time this is happens "for free" - but the 10% of users things don't run for, well - good luck. They don't care.

Something on your system does not like Steam + FE..

I've found FE's biggest troubles are Desktop Screen mode and modern "power shifting".

Easiest to try is dissabling any power saving modes during run time ie; "pre screen saver".

Steam; Its not so much that they don't care is that they can't realy. Way to many Hardware combintions out here without mentioning softwares. (oops, I just did)

EDIT; fergot to mention Steam also has "screen handler" so between that, FE's odd screen handler and "power shifting" ..and happened after a time with it. You changed something on your system, or something did.

not to troll the subject.. but I really believe if they wanted to prevent nonfunctional purchases, Steam would simply require demos for all products. Trivial and effective.

..what?? They don't all have one! Yup, would be great thing. Motion Seconded!

The only ones I have I knew exactly what I was getting. This one caught me off, a bit clunky in parts. I had seen all the beta months and chatter. ..still, cool game.

It loads fairly slowly without feedback, but it does load for me in Steam (Windows 7 64bit)

I had the same problem. Thanks for the tip! Like you, it's my first negative experience with Steam, but it is one strike against them and their app. I buy games to playl them, not to troubleshoot them...

I don't think it's my system, the game has run fine several times (three in total). It's just that it doesn't run the other 96% of the time. I know this because it ran fine the first time, then again after a while, and I needed steam to install the update, so I had to try and try and try and reboot, and delete the exe file and a hundred other things until magically it ran again. It's the oddest thing. Incidentally, I also have Windows 7 64 bit. Bobcat, what's a 'prescreen saver"? I know the answer to this damned problem will be something simple, like "the hat has fallen off the snowman, put it back on". Very annoying.

Weird, out of 400~ steam games I own, probably 2-3 games don't work because of some odd reasons, the rest work perfectly including Fallen Enchantress.

Who's Bobcat??

There is not "a prescreen saver", is said "pre screen saver" as in anything _before_ screen saver.

There are multiple power saving "modes" long before the screensaver and its "power saving".

The most obvious is laptops have modes that put CPU and Screen into low power consuption during normal use. Like while typing a message you don't need it blazing at a ba-zillion giga hertz and suk'n up battery juice.

Modern hi powered vid' cards run, basicaly at 1/2 power while using normal desktop mode.

Then when most games start it shifts to full power and fullscreen.

FE's problem is it sets DESKTOP borderless window modes.

So vid' card has to run 3d game(FE) from low power desktop mode. Some don't like this. Some get confused bouncing back and forth between power modes.

This is one example of power shifting. Other devices do it too, another big power hog is network cards. A good example of a PRE screen saver power saving mode.

We all know, well almost everyone, when screen saver kicks other power savers do too.

So, sit with FE while working out strategies or tactics ..just thinking. System can kick in any power saving mode. INCLUDING the screen saver.

..troubles.

I have another post; "Found FullScreen mode..." with tip to force its hand for the hi-power vid' cards and as side effect helps with other power saving modes.

..as in, its working in fullscreen d3d mode, no power saving there..!

whew.. a bit long winded that.

THIS was exactly my problem. I switched my laptop to high performance (a simple click) before I launch the game and it works fine. I can simply revert it back after with just as much ease and no problems. Thanks.
