Hi guys,
We currently have people working on fixing this problem and we will do our best to repair this bug ASAP.
Sorry for the inconvenience and stay tuned for the updates.

Bartek (TECHLAND)
I fixed it for me, was an issue with the wmf redist 11 refusing to install, went and downloaded the latest windows media player from MS which included the same ♥♥♥♥ but would actualy install. the wmfdist11 crashed dring initial setup for me and every time i tried installing that after it. tho just cos that was causing the issue for me its not necesarily what was causing the issue for everyone else.

Same problem but I can't even launch up the game without using -nologos or it black screens without showing anything.

Here's what I posted on the Steam forums:

This has probably been posted on the forums already but I can't seem to find anything so here goes.

Upon launching Riptide, I get a black screen. Every so often (15%) it launches successfully and I get to the main menu and actually get to do stuff. If I try starting the game with the command line -nologos, it works and just goes to the menu.

Now this is the part where the second problem comes in. After selecting a character, I am greeted with another black screen. I've tried numerous fixes for this (updating drivers, setting logs restrictions, deleting the Riptide folder in My Documents etc.) but nohting seems to help. Has anyone had this problem or knows how to fix it?

Here are my system specs. They're not optimal but I think I should be able to run the game:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPUb E6750 @ 2.66GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
RAM: 2GB
Resolution: 1440 x 900 (60Hz)

Thanks in advance!

Yes yes. I don't see the intro-videos too. (in Dead Island the same problem with intro-videos, but I can play in DI, but in Riptide - I can't)
I use "-nologos" command. (for solve problem with invisible intro-videos)

same problem...

I had a similar problem when i first started the game. Try going to the \Steam\steamapps\common\diriptide folder find an exe called "DeadIslandGame_x86_rwdi.exe", right click it and select properties, then under compatibility check "Disable desktop composition", press OK and run the game from that exe. That worked for me.

It's only for Windows 7.

but I have Windows 8.
This option "Disable desktop composition" doesn't exist in the Windows 8.

This sounds like the problem i was having (choosing to create a new character, or importing one of my old, and i just get a black screen after that)

What was the cause of the problem?
Dead Island: Riptide couldn't find the following dll: Wmvcore.dll and therefore couldn't load/decode/play the videos contained within the "diriptide\DI\Data\Menu\Movies" folder

This is how i solved it:

Step 1: Download http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19289
Step 2: Installed the update.
Step 3: Restarted my computer
Step 4: Launch Dead Island: Riptide

You SHOULD be good to go now.

Note 1: I am running the game in compability mode for WinXP SP3 with disabled visual themes and disabled desktop composition. I am not sure if this will affect the game or not.

Computer Specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate N (Service Pack 1)
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E6850 @ 3GHz
GPU: NVidia/EVGA GeForce GTX670
RAM: 2GB old stuff
Resolution: 1920x1080 @ 60/75hz

I know this isn't probably going to be the solution most of you want to hear, but I just fixed the problem by upgrading from 32bit Windows 7 to 64bit and the game runs flawlessly! I sure do hope Techland fixes the problem for others though, not everyone can afford to change their OS.
