I do not work with or as a Nexon Employee; I'm just tired of repeating myself over and over, so I made this.

Also check out Mar's FAQ guide for more in-depth information on specific questions.

  1. How do I change the information I entered into the Steam MapleStory Launcher?
    • You can't change the information in the launcher. Once your press the 'ok' you are accepting the terms and conditions that say you agree to link what you have entered, nothing else, to your Steam Account, and therefor cannot be erased from it.

    • Solution: Play through the MapleStory website.
    .
  2. Steam MapleStory keeps giving me an error message when I [try to] open it/Steam MapleStory doesn't even load in. Help!
    • Steam MapleStory currently does not work because of many reasons. However, Steam MapleStory will work for some people on their first attempt.

    • Opprinnelig skrevet av by OACMann:
[/b]: Common solutions for Steam problems include deleting the app manifest in your 'steamapps' folder, usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps. Maplestory is appmanifest_216150.acf

    • Solution: Play through the MapleStory website, play through the Steam Gamelauncher, or copy/paste all files from Website MS into the Steam MS folder.

    • Note: The Steam Gamelauncher of MapleStory may not work for some players.
    .
  3. I'm a MapleStory veteran and I haven't played MapleStory since 20XX; what new things are there?
    • Big Bang introduced easier leveling, Chaos introduced PvP and link skill characters, Legend introduced Jett and the beginning of the Legend's Story, Justice introduced Phantom and other characters, Tempest introduced Luminous and the Nova characters, Hyper introduced hyper skills for all classes; Unleashed introduced more characters; Cygnus Awakens introduced KoC revamp; RED Introduced Zero and Explorer revamps. More patches are introduced every week-month.

Note: these are only patches, not a full list of what has changed.
    .
  4. I'm a MapleStory veteran and I haven't played MapleStory since 20XX and I forgot my pin/PIC; how do I reset it?
    • Solution: Go to the website (http://maplestory.nexon.net/) -> Log into your account -> Click Manage Account (top right) -> Click "send reset email" -> Open MapleStory -> Select a world/channel then select a character -> Enter a new PIC. Try not to forget it this time.

Note: You may need to check your email before logging onto MS.
    .
  5. I'm a MapleStory veteran and I haven't played MapleStory since 20XX and I forgot my password; how do I reset it?
    • Solution: Go to the website (http://maplestory.nexon.net/) -> Log into your account -> Click "Manage Account" at the top right -> Click "Change Password" -> Enter your new password, after answering your security questions, if there are any.

Note: You may need to check your email before logging onto MS.
    .
  6. Whenever i load up MapleStory, none of the worlds load. Why aren't they loading in?
    • If you are running the Steam version of MapleStory, try verifying integrity of game cache. Right click the game in your library, click properties, go to local files, and choose the option mentioned. Otherwise try uninstalling/reinstalling the game.

    • There are no solutions yet that will solve this problem completely.
    .
  7. I wonder if I can trade [Insert game other than MS here] items for [Enter type of MS item here] items in MapleStory.
    • If people want to, then yes. However, there is a designated "trading" section to post your topics in if you are looking to trade,
    .
  8. If I can't change the information in the Steam launcher, can I still play through Steam MS?
    • Solution: Yes, you can still play through Steam MS. Just go to the Steam MS folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\common\MapleStory), then use GameLauncher.exe to play the game.

    • Note: The Steam Gamelauncher of MapleStory may not work for some players.
    .
  9. Why is Nexon in charge of MapleStory? They suck.
    • Answer: That is your opinion. Your opinions are always welcomed. For further discussion, please check out my other discussion: The Middle Ground.

In response to number 3, you skipped the Hyper update, and I think you missed one more. Unless youre counting Hyper as part of Leashed

Thank you, I knew I was forgetting a few things.

so manually removing the virus for number 4 dosent count as a solution i guess?

Getting rid of the trojan isn't a confirmed way to get rid of the lag in town, no. It works for some people, some people get rid of it and still have the problem. Doesn't mean getting rid of the trojan is a bad idea, it's always good to do that.
J0shMJ 7. aug. 2013 kl. 18.30
its the trojan itself im concerned about, not the lag in the town (im assuming the town is Henesys considering thats where most players chat) but thanks for the information though, however I havent been told where this trojan is located yet, plus it might be a good idea to put this info in the guide so others can get rid of the virus ASAP Jamillia

I'm sure doing a simple scan with AVG Anti-Virus (or a complete scan if youre really paranoid) will find it. If it doesn't come up with it, youre one of the lucky people who doesn't have it.
Jamillia 7. aug. 2013 kl. 18.55
Usually the virus scan after downloading a file will get rid of the trojan. But if you're really unsure of your computer's safety you can always run a anti-virus scan after downloading MS.
Terezi_pyrope 8. aug. 2013 kl. 10.50
this implies that maplestory itself is a virus, this is not the case, it makes no sense. there would be lawsuits out the ass if nexon put a virus in their software.
SwordFishII 8. aug. 2013 kl. 12.09
Who said nexon put a virus (actually it's a trojan) in their software? That's highly unlikely. What is way more likely is that someone hacked into the server and uploaded a trojan onto it (servers that hold files are normally kept seperate and less secure than the servers that hold the game), and the trojan attaches onto any download that comes out.
Anvilanche 8. aug. 2013 kl. 16.24
Nexon didn't put a virus in it, nor did anyone hack them and upload a virus onto Nexons clients. You end up causing a commotion with that sort of talk. This is happening with Vindictus too, not just MapleStory. It's a problem with Steam, searching everywhere for a solution.

Not like Nexon has a nice reputation regardless.
SwordFishII 8. aug. 2013 kl. 21.01
People aren't reporting getting a trojan after downloading it off steam though, only through the nexon website...it might be a coincidense, it might not be.

Bumping the FAQ so it stays at the top
J0shMJ 9. aug. 2013 kl. 22.33
ok...I know a few of you gave me some advice on dealing with the trojan (though at this point from what im seeing right now in this topic im not sure what to believe) but I feel like My question didnt get answered, so i'll say it again... all I'm asking is where the trojan is located on the PC once you download the game, I know you told me to use anti-virus software but...how about we look at it this way....lets say I got done downloading maplestory and immediately decide to run a scan that check 100% of my PC, hours later the scan is done and it says there are no viruses detected, so when i decided to turn on my PC again the next day I suddenly find out my PC has been screwed over because of a trojan that didnt get detected by my anti-virus software and have no choice but to restore my PC to factory settings...so what im asking again is what is the file path that this trojan decides to go to
Terezi_pyrope 10. aug. 2013 kl. 8.13
J0shMJ that actually shows right there that there isn't a trojan. the way a trojan works is it embeds itself in a file, which means if you downloaded maplestory and didn't launch it, the trojan would be in the download of maplestory specifically. it would be in either that file, or one of the auto-downloaded files from the patcher. besides if you have a half way decent AV it would detect right away when it tried to run, because there is no way is someone using a 0-day on maplestory, not to mention by now this issue has been ongoing for years, there would have been a fix if it was a virus at all.

Therefor, it's not a virus. it is hackers, but there is no trojan on your computer as a result unless you downloaded stuff from a different website (IE a hack). the lag in towns is caused by hackers with a map-hack. what i've heard is that it gets a list of everyone who is in town and spams them with invalid trade requests and friend requests in an attempt to disconnect them through lag, and anyone that's immune is for whatever reason on a 'white-list' meaning they aren't getting spammed. something is telling the hack to specifically ignore those people.

When the OP called the trojan a "Verified rumor" I think they're just going on "well enough people think it's a trojan so it must be true". looking at their totally blank profile, I'm pretty sure they aren't actually wizet/nexon staff, and therefor have 0 inside information into the subject, and isn't in an 'legit' position to clairify anything. a really long playtime, doesn't make you a tech expert.

Your computer is safe*.

No, I am not part of the Staff, but over the summer everyone has been complaining about the lag in town with no specific origin, or their computer being messed up the next day immediatly after playing MS, so they formed a logically guess that their computer's had received a virus. As more and more people started receiving this 'virus' it became clear that it wasn't just a rumor and it was a 'well enough' guess that it was actually there. However, as I revised the forum, I did write that it is not this 'virus' that's the problem, but the user itself.
