Home Support FAQ (please read before posting)
Hi folks!

I just wanted to include this FAQ (the same one that's on the site[www.homehorror.com]) for those experiencing issues with the game.

We've only encountered a few specific issues that folks seem to repeatedly report. Some are Game Maker-related (what Home was created in), some are just bugs we're looking to fix, and some are oddballs we can't quite figure out.

Still, give this a look before you post a question to see if it helps. As always, email us at http://mailto:support@homehorror.com if you do have an issue, so we can track the problem and respond accordingly.

Q: How do I save in the game? (UPDATED)

A: As of v1.3.3, Home now features an auto-save feature. The game will save automatically at a few key points throughout the game. When you exit the game, it'll let you know what it will remember for you.

Q: My controller isn't working! (v1.3.2+)

A: Home officially supports the Microsoft Xbox 360 controller and (theoretically) Xinput-compatible devices. Answer the following questions first to see if this fixes anything:

a) If you plug your gamepad in and play Home, do you see on-screen prompts for the controller or for the keyboard? (e.g. "Press [A]" or "Press Space"?)
b) If you quit Home, unplug your controller, and launch the game again, can you play with keyboard controls?
c) If you have any keymapping software (JoyToKey, Xpadder, etc.) installed, please disable or uninstall it, and see if that works
d) As always, update your drivers. Microsoft's official Xbox drivers are here.

Q: Where is my Steam manual? (UPDATED)

A: Check the right-hand-column on the Steam store page; click on "View the Manual" to get the PDF. Alternatively, you can right-click on the Home icon in Steam, choose Properties, and find the link there.

Q: The game isn't loading sound. What do I do?

A: A few people with Asus sound cards in Windows 7 are experiencing this issue. We've been told one of these two options should work:

1. Try right-clicking the Home executable, and choosing "Run as Administrator."

2. In the Asus driver menu, you must turn off the "Xear 3D" and the "SoundRadar" modes. (Submitted by K4on)

Another user notes: "I had the problem when using the Dolby effects processor with the Xonar features apparently turned off. You can only run one or the other but it seems leaving the Xonar settings turned on while using the Dolby processor also prevents Game Maker from detecting the audio device."

Q: My game freezes after my screensaver kicks in (Windows Vista)

A: There is a bug with Game Maker games that can cause this in certain versions of Windows (specifically, Vista). While there isn't a fix for this, if you please turn off your screensaver before playing, you should be okay.

Q: When I try to start Home, I see the error message "Floating point division by zero."

A: This seems to be an issue with 32-bit copies of Windows (XP, Vista, 7, Server and Server 2008) that have had the Physical Address Extension (PAE) patch of SP1 installed. You'll need to use a non-patched version of Windows.

Q: The game freezes or crashes when I move up the watertower, or when I make a choice in the basement (v1.3.1).

A: There's a bug that we are going to address in the next update.

Q: What is the code to the safe?

A: You might want to check that fancy PDF manual you got with the game.... or, maybe the internet can help.[www.homehorror.com]

In the new update how do i use my keyboard, i can still exit the game by pressing esc and then Y or N but the visuals still say Y and B and so i can't get past the menu as it asks me to press A ._. so it's basically always launching in controller mode or whatever

Hi there:

I just have to ask a few basic questions first:

• can you give me your system specs?
• at the time, did you have a controller plugged in?
• at the time, did you have any keymapping software installed (for remapping keys, or apps like JoyKey for mapping controllers to keyboard strokes)?

In the meantime, here are the keyboard controls (these are also available in the game's manual):

Left and right arrows: move left and right
Up arrow: look up
Y key: choose "Yes"
N key" choose "No"
Right arrow (when in a text screen): speed up text
Down arrow (text screen): continue
ESC: quite game
F4: toggle full-screen/windowed modes

Intel dual core i3 2.4 / 2.4 GHz 4gb RAM 64 bit Windows 7 ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 512 mb Graphics Card, i had my USB wifi antenna (from the back of the old 360) plugged in to my laptop so i get a better connection to my wifi (i assure you it works) i have MotionInJoy installed but it wasn't running at the time, and the only thing i could plug my xbox controller into my laptop with was the plug and play, which only provides power, so there was no way my xbox controller could have been connected to my laptop

bump

Rebump.

The game is not recognizing my gamepad (an old Logitech Rumblepad 2.) So I tried using the keyboard and it wouldn't recognize it either, I had to alt-tab out of it and kill it with the process manager.

Hi guys:

I'm just one developer, so it takes time for me to respond to requests. Please be respectful, and I'll be able to better help out.

I will be taking a look at both your issues and will try to respond on Monday or so.

Thanks,
B.
