I've tried a couple of MMO's but I'm a bit hard to please when it comes to MMO's. The Secret World (TSW) isn't perfect, but it does a couple of things "right" (and in my opinion better then other MMO's).
The Secret World is just great when it comes to pull you into a different world.
The Non-player-characters (NPC's) in most other games are boring stereotypes with no real life to them. The NPC's in this game feel like real persons. It's also worth noting that is features many strong female characters that are believable and not just "hot chicks".
Same goes for the story. It's presented in a believable way and (literally !) forces you to think outside the box (which can be difficult at times).
The combat feels at least a litte more "active" then many other MMO's. Most of the time your free to stand around and activate your abilities but at least sometimes it pay's off to evade enemy special attacks. There is surely room for improvemend here, but it's way better then JUST standing around and mashing buttons all of the time.
I'm not a big fan of class systems. Especially when there is not much of a difference between two members of the same class. No classes in TSW. Your free to build your fighting style the way you like it using a combination of up to two active styles and all the passive ones you can learn.
On the downside there is no character development besides fighting. There are no craft skills for example (anyone can craft anything right from the start).
DLC's and the shop
Yes, there is stuff you can buy for real money which some people may find annoying. What TSW does well about this is that it doesn't rub it in your face all the time and there is a big selection of stuff you can buy with gameworld-coins.
The game has enough content to keep you occupied for a while to come without ever touching any DLC's. As for the vanity items (clothing, pets, etc.) there is a big store in the game where you can find a lot of different clothes for in-game-money. So the only thing you might need to buy would be a pet if you have to have one (it does give you any bonus anyways).
Might not be a game for everyone, but of all the MMO's I've seen so far it's the one that fit's my needs best.
PS: Many people noted bugs. I've played it for a while now and I would guess that they got rid of the bugs since I didn't encounter any.
