Launcher Issues
Anyone else here still unable to launch the game? Its been almost a month now and I am still unable to play (have installed new games since then and they work fine). I am having the issue where after clicking play nothing happens, and reading through the forums prviously I noticed many others with the same issue. I was just wondering if anyone has a *NEW* fix perhaps? I've tried everything posted on the forums thus far and nothing works.

Edit: I have emailed back on forth with the coding manager at CA and he gave up on it saying "a new hard drive and OS" which is just unreasonable seeing as EVERY other game works plus my newly installed games work just fine.

Thanks for the reply i know what file youre talking about but that only works if you can get rome to lau nch in the first place, its an appdata folder that only gets created once the game has been run :(

i had the same problem. after release i could play the game without problems, then after the first or second patch the launcher would crash immediately after clicking the play button in steam. it just showed a black square where the launcher window was suposed to be and then it crashed. couldn`t start the game anymore, always got the windows error "launcher.exe has stopped working".the details showed a problem with atioglxx.dll. so it is some openGL problem with the launcher that they still haven`t sorted out. i tried all possible fixes (deleting the folders in appdata, verifying game cache, reinstall on different partition, update drivers, use older drivers, use beta drivers, change language, reinstall windows) nothing helped, until i found a post on a small german games forum by accident (don`t know the name anymore, can`t remember through which links i got there).

SOLUTION:

1. make a backup copy of your launcher.exe just in case (located in folder "your drive letter:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\launcher\launcher.exe"
2. delete the launcher.exe or rename it to something different
3. copy your rome2.exe into the launcher folder (so now u have rome2.exe in game folder and 2nd rome2.exe in launcher folder)
4. rename the rome2.exe that is now in your launcher folder to launcher.exe
5.click play rome2 in steam

This will start the game directly without starting the launcher. So if the launcher crashes for you but you were able to play the game before the patches, this might help you.
You will have to repeat this after the next patch is released because it will create a new launcher.exe that actually tries to start the launcher again. I tested if the patch 3 had fixed the launcher crash, but it didn`t. So i copied the rome2.exe to the launcher folder and renamed it to launcher.exe again. Works for me.
Hope this helps you.

It just gives me "miss executable"

are you sure you copied it to the right location, while keeping the original in place? this is how it looks in my folder:

normally, you have

D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\rome2.exe (with eagle icon)
and
D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\launcher\launcher.exe (with horse icon)

now delete the launcher.exe inside the launcher folder.
copy (not move, but copy; keep the original where it is) rome2.exe to where the launcher.exe used to be. now you should have:

D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\rome2.exe (with eagle icon)
and
D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\launcher\rome2.exe (with eagle icon)

so the rome2.exe is in both of the folders.
Now rename the rome2.exe, which you just put into the launcher folder, to launcher.exe

Now you should have:

D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\rome2.exe (with eagle icon)
and
D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\launcher\launcher.exe (with eagle icon instead of horse icon)

If you click "play" in steam, it will start the "new" launcher.exe, which will bring you straight into the game, without starting the actual launcher. don`t double click the launcher.exe or the rome2.exe, but start the game through steam like you would normally do.
Make sure you renamed the correct file, and make sure the launcher.exe in launcher folder now has eagle icon instead of horse icon. keep the rome2.exe in its original location.
(D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Total War Rome II\rome2.exe)

Paolo you're awesome, that worked for me finally.

by the way when renaming the rome2 file to launcher remember it's already an exe file.. don't type launcher.exe.. just rename the rome2.exe, launcher.

, that's why you get the missing command ♥♥♥♥..

i know because i'm stupid and i did this.. then i figured it out.
