The lack of accents and possible language influence on dialogue for Rome 2
I have to say first off that the Total War series is one of my favorite series of any strategy based game. I just want to pose a concern that I felt makes no sense at all for me when it comes to immersion into the game.

I wondered before its release whether they would actually use Latin for the Romans and a potential plethora of languages(Despite the almost certain problems in recreating dead or antiquitated languages not commonly spoken anymore). I have to cite that one of the mods that was made for Rome: Total War is called, "Europa Barbarorum". This mod features actual usage of Latin, Greek, Gaelic, Germanic, and other close to authentic attmepts with what information they had on other languages.

Given that, it made a great impact on the immersive quality of the game itself. However, in Rome 2 a big and in my opinion glaring annoyance is that every single commander or otherwise unit with a programmed speech process talks with a British accent; no matter which culture they belong to.

I watched the videos before the release and was shocked that neither Macedon nor Rome had any sort of dialect or accent even though the cultures are different. I found that it was stupid that every culture is somehow tied to a British vernacular. It doesn't make sense. Creative Assembly could have either have hired professors/scholars specialized in the languages, or have actors native to the regions or culture at least read the lines.

Alternatively they could have reached out to the Total War community and see if fans would want to attempt the programming of the voice work. The community already has done a fantastic job of creating many modifications on all the Total War games. So, why would they keep it unrealistic over missing out on a devoted fan base?

Again, I'm wanting to stress how odd and confusingly unrealistic it is for EVERY dialogue given in Rome 2 has a British accent. Not at all accounting for language differences, nor cultural differences.

Feel free to agree to disagree on the topic. I just would like to know if others share the same feeling.

it gets even worse your grunts talk to you as if they were the boss and you a pawn and the intro videos for each faction are gone and replaced by nothingness.

would be weird to hear people shout in dead language accents..
and finding someone who can sound like that would be hard..

Not to mention that we have only a few fragments of languages like Punic, Parthian, and ancient Macedonian. Fantastic idea in theory, impossible in practice without some severe compromises like Macedonians speaking Attic Greek and common Roman soldiers speaking Classical Latin.

Rome, by the way, does use quite a few Latin phrases during battles (such as 'mandate tua' for 'by your order'). I think they're the only ones that use any of their own language, though, apart from the occasional 'Yes, Strategos' from Greek troops.

Yeah but they could have hired a few unemployed Italians to yell insults at each other and record it. They were boasting about how they spent so much more on this game, but on what? Production values are a lot lower.

Having Romans speak with Italian accents is just as inaccurate as giving them English accents. We have no idea how they sounded, especially when speaking colloquial Latin.
