Rome 2 is crashing my steam client and windows!
Hi. I preordered my copy of Rome 2 a few months ago. I got the notification that it was ready for preload and so did it, there were no problems. Then when I woke up on release day everything changed. I went in to play the game and I got a screen saying the game needed updating. So I left it running for a few minutes but there was no progress on the update bar and the game continued to show in my tab as "100%". So I tried to pause and unpause the update, but as the download was "stopping" my steam client completely froze and shut it's self down. And ever since so long as the game has been active in some way on steam I've been having the same issue. If I launch my steam client I will get possibly 10 minutes tops before it locks up and eventually shuts it's self down, and steam will not even allow it's self to be launched again as the "steam bootstrapper" process is still running and not allowing me to terminate it. It also causes windows to lock up eventually too. The only thing I found that fixed this was using my revo uninstall tool to uninstall steam and erase the entire steam directory including all games and applications it was supporting. (30GB+) At this moment in time I cannot even allow the game to download on my pc for fear of this happening again and I'm not happy. From the looks of support/fan forums it's looking like anybody's issues are with playing the game, and I can't even get that far. Hell. I can't even play another game because steam locks up and crashes them. Could really use some help with this.

And before anybody says it yes I am 100000000% positive that Rome 2 is causing the problem. I completely wiped steam off my pc yesterday and reinstalled it, as long as I didn't try to install rome I was fine. Then I've just tried it this morning and it's all gone♥♥♥♥♥♥up again.

Might ave something to do with the way Rome 2 is unpacked. Try steam customer support...
Steam support links me to Sega, who I've now contacted.

But if you tell them steams locking up after you try and launch they'll probably blame it on steam not there product. Meh maybe they'll have a fix , all i know is alot of people are moaning about graphics , gameplay issues with rome 2 so its probably something dodgey in the game. FYI the games good but too easy. Also my computers running it with the graphics on extreme, it shouldnt be possible so theres definetly some graphics issues with it. Good luck though.
Thank you. And I'm expecting them to blame steam but it's denfinity their product. And that's the annoying thing. Everybody else is complaining about gameplay and crashes but I can't even get that far. I guess I'll just have to wipe steam off my hard drive again and stay away from it till they find a fix :/

Just re-read your problem , you woke up on the day of release and it said it needed updating then the progress bar didnt move at all? it sounds like its failing to unpack the 9.9gb pre-download. On release i had to wait 20+ minutes for it to unpack the pre-release download . So its something to do with the unpacker or something your end , is there enough space on your steam drive for it to unpack? Just a suggestion.
Yeah I'd preloaded it then on the day it updated automatically, then finished and went back to showing "Rome 2 100%" When I tried to launch it, it tried to update again then started this stupid cycle of crashes. And I have plenty room on my pc, I like to keep it that way or it affects performace. I think your right though the unpacker might be ♥♥♥♥ed.

Yeah thats SEGA's problem , troll there support staff until you get an answer or a fix , demand some form of compensation for the time and money you've spent on this game & trying to fix it. Shouldnt have to f around with brand new games they should have had the digital copys perfected for release.
I intend to. I've never had much trouble with a steam or total war game in my life. I expect better than this from them.

I have a problem like this as well. I'm trying to install it and it gets to 78% and says "updating" but goes no further, and then steam crashes.

I have a similar issue, i got to 87% My copy is on disc, disc set up was fine, it seems to be the didital updates crippleing me! So it's a sega issue rather than a steam one? I am confused...

I had the same issue and can't even install the game: Preordered, preloaded, on release day would only update to 100% then stop, freezes client then crashed to desktop. Reinstalled steam tried to reinstall Rome2 and the client gets 67.6mb of 9.9gb into download then freeze and eventually crashes to desktop.

Not happy and seem in a minority as most people are complaining about what happens once they are in game.
For now guys if you wanna hold on to your working version of steam, close steam, go to steam/steamapps/downloads and find the file holding the rome files and delete it. You may need to reboot before you can delete the "launcher.dll" file though. Lets just hold out for a fix I guess.

and when it does work, you can still track the unpacking process by going under Library -> Downloads.

There should be a bar on the background with the text.
Technically, I'm just saying you don't have to stare at the 100% without knowing whereabouts it is with the unpacking.

I just had to uninstall steam, and it did not go down without a fight either. Had to race to uninstall it against the PC seizing up and dieng on me. Dayum dat's some crazy♥♥♥♥♥issues.
