Trying again after 1 month
I played for awhile after launch. The game was pretty pitiful, but patches were coming in. I shelved R2 for a month-6 weeks and just tried again last night.

The AI is still game breaking, performance is still way below industry standard and worst of all the general gameplay is still a overly streamlined boring expierence. The later of course I expect will never be changed.

What a waste.

It is getting better. About every one in 3 battles, the AI does something interesting to try to outmaneuver me.

If you don't start a new campaign, the patches won't apply.

I can't really blame them for the streamlining; it's not like they took out any options, (except for the family tree) and have indeed added stances like "ambush".

Furthermore, the rumors that the game was released unfinished because of SEGA are sounding more and more valid. Each time an update is added, I notice content that was not in the previous update. (Images, sounds, etc.)

If the game is still breaking (crashing) for you, that's one thing. But I suspect you don't like a lot of the features because they are new and different. Most people's kneejerk reaction to new and different is negative. Give the UI and new features a little time, I think they will grow on you.

I've noticed that the AI will sometimes reposition its men into a better defensive position if they are defending on a open field but that's about it. But I've noticed they don't even care what unit is facing yours. For example if they have spear and swordmen it often will put ths swordmen in the path of your calvary instead of the common sense choice of the spears. Even worse is this can be exploited to be used with slingers to make them hit the units from the side killing and lowering morale faster and unless the player puts slingers way too close the AI will just sit there and take the beating.

I previously gave up on Empire TW through frustration, but every other TW game had better AI than this. I've played all the TW series since Shogun1. The graphics are superb but the AI is rubbish.
I'm also thinking of shelving the game for a month or so to see if they can fix it?

With what they advertised with the AI and shown in the videos lead people to believe during release the the AI quality was due to a bug rather than the actual quality of the AI but it has become clear that it is the AI quality. Some apologists still try to claim it will be "fixed" ensuring its still bug caused but even most of them have abandoned that claim and refuse to even touch the topic.

At this point with what we know the truth the only way I could see the AI making the drastic improvements needed to be considered acceptble is if they totally rework the entire AI. I don't see that happening, I don't see them investing that much time and money. This would require them to basically take that portion of development and start all over again and we never ever see such a thing happen after post release. It's going to end up like Empire where tweaks will happen to show some minor improvement but the AI will never actually be a challenge.
King of the Mods Nov 4, 2013 @ 8:38am
Well, I admit this is the first TW game where I felt compelled to try mods; in part, to be fair, this is the first time that I have had a decent internet connection as well, so where in the past I may have thought problems were more to do with my pc at the time, having read lots of the threads on here (and waded through some venomous hate!), I now realise that all the TW games have been released with bugs, glitches, crashes etc, lol.

That said, this certainly does appear to have been released too soon and before proper testing etc, but CA have tried their best to fix the worst of these issues as quickly as is humanly possible. Personally, the only real performance issues I've encountered with TW:R2, was when I had the beta3 patch; since un-subscribing from beta patches those problems do not exist on my game any more.

The mods that I am using are the two STIM ones and I have to say that I am enjoying the game; I think it is more immersive than some posters are giving it credit for and it does have depth; one maybe needs to adjust ones gaming style/attitude to realise it....that's what I've done :) Also, with the STIM mods the AI isn't anywhere near as dumb as it was at release; often I encounter light cav units going to great lengths to try and outflank my spear units, often to the point where I feel it necessary to go slow-mo while I completely re-position several units to counter their manouvers!

I'm playing as the Suebi, on a low-end entry-level pc as well btw :)
