Playing as sparta and war broke with Parthia, i learned the hard way about horse archers and freaking awesome Immortals, got my army massacred but i gave them a hell of a fight then i asked for peace and they took it.

Parthia and counterparts is a real tough faction to deal with. I've never expanded further east in any of my campaigns but I played Parthia for a short while, and their army setup is absolutely devestating.

I personally always watch my steps when hitting the eastern shores of the mediteranean thanks to the Seleucid Empire. Whenever you get into war with them you immediately get a bunch of its satrapies to declare war on you and before you know it the entire middle-east is picking up arms against you.

Seleucid actually died fast just like egypt.... i actually conquered the whole east. I could do more but i let my allied Knossos and cyprus do their share. Now i will expand towards Rome and gonna try use my new Dacian/Thrace army built....I wished theres a mod where you can just give a town/city to your friend so they wont die that fast. I like conquering for them but now i have to watch and go along with their army and help conquer.

The historical Parthians gave the Romans a very hard time, they couldn't cope with the horse archers and the armoured horsemen...seem to recall they did for Crassus

Athens. They live right next to me, and have massive naval power. I hate ship battles.

Athens is by far one of the best factions to be allied to. They will help greatly in controling the seas and are more than happy to help conquer much of the map.

Not a good ally if your sparta. Sure they help you out a lot but you need athens (city) if you ever want to trade.

This was a unfortunate design choice even more so as the game encourages Sparta to be allies with Athens. But then again is trade really worth it? Income flows so freely in this game that I've never had issues. I typically put my global tax rate all the way down to increase happiness to allow for more farming and military buildings and I still always end up with a treasury that must be a size of a city itself.

I fear the Selucids on my nomadic tribes campaign because fighting selucids isn't enough, prepare to fight its extended counter parts my HA's dont really make an impact there considering their wide variety of cavalry. Yeah not easy but fun! slowly taking their territory piece by piece on very hard mode.I defeated parthis no problem we had almost congruent units so i just kept skirmishing them into my melee units. EDIT on a side note Nomadics can't get any good infantry units which makes that much harder to gain ground just a bunch shooting and running away until you get Noble Steppe Lancers/Archers

It's funny that they never seemed to learn how to cope with them. When the barbarian invasion came they still were unable to beat horse archers :D

Personally I am unsure how to deal with a highly mobile ranged military force who is use to living off the land and hard times. I mean they likely don't need a baggage train, they can leave upon meeting a overwhelming situation or quickly move in to take a small force. If they know the parthian shot they can even slowly cut down any cav sent after them. I think the best chance against them would be to lure them into a trap, corner them some how or make them attack and scare the horses with fire. Or somehow undercut the will of the people to fight, give them something shiney or show them the joys of living in a Roman city.

Horsemen are bad in sieges (Big reason why china did build huge wall), that is one of their weakness. Other is horses themselves. Horses won't breed fast and they also need huge amounts of food. They can get away from battles but they need to stop sometimes to feed them. Not to mention that you could do same as russians did against France. Aka burn everything and retreat.

Of course taking out horses would be also very beneficial also.

SEGA :3
(What difficulty are you guys on? Ive tried hard and its so easy i cant be bothered continuing and as yet i havent even completed a campaign but i dont want to go to the higher diffuculties as the AI just cheats by having higher stats and free money but isnt more clever or did they change that?)
