Game won't work!!!!
I did the "Your First Game" tutorial and hit the run button to test it out... and then I just got a window that says Compile Messageswith two tabs labeled Compile and Source Control. Why won't my game run?

Is there any text inside the Compile tab?
Jawlswyno Feb 5, 2013 @ 9:33pm
If you could post your compile message and desribe up to where you've gotten we might be able to help you better.
Otherwise, this site might help if you have trouble and cant explain all the errors.
http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/make/tutorials
it has a pdf and some premade files you can import, finish and play.
Some are a bit dated though. But please, no posting of any more clown clicking games.

lol, I'm not posting the game, I just wanted to do the tutorial. I'm asking because if I can't get this to run, I probably won't be able to run other games I make. This is what it says in the Compile box, and I don't have any clue what it means, except that the "Writing Chunk" part seems to list things you can create or edit in GameMaker:

I'm having the same problem that you described. I tried to run the game but the screen just doesn't appear. I thought it might be my computer, so I tested the file in another computer with game maker and it worked just fine. Did you tried your file in another computer as well?
I'm looking for something that might help solve this, but nothing yet.

You've got me curious now, did you make an executable then run it on a different computer or install game maker and re-did the tutorial?

It doesn't seem to have any compile errors so seeing if we can't narrow the problem. (though I might be out of my depth here.)
Does it build an empty window or doesnt do anything after compiling or creates a blank screen?
Did you attempt to make an executable. then install it or run normally from inside game maker?
At what point in the tutorial did you try to run?
Did you build one room with the clown in it and not a second room with nothing in it?
(I doubt its related but asking anyways)
Under file preferences is the load in fullscreen checked or unchecked?
Under resources game settings, sub tab windows, sub tab graphics is start in full screen checked or unchecked.

I didn't try to do it because, I must confess, I don't know how to. I'm really new to game maker and the tutorial as it was described in the game maker from Steam, I had to upload my game to the Steam workshop so it could be played throught it. I didn't quite understand that, but now I'm in another computer and I will try to run the game again.

About your questions:

Does it build an empty window or doesnt do anything after compiling or creates a blank screen?
It doesn't do anything. Actually, it does open and close some windows, but it is too quick for me to understand what's going on. Then it shows those same code lines and nothing else.

Did you attempt to make an executable. then install it or run normally from inside game maker?
Not yet. I'll try now from another computer.

At what point in the tutorial did you try to run?
I was following the tutorial like it was described. I think I tried when everything was set, the room, the instances for the clown...

Did you build one room with the clown in it and not a second room with nothing in it?
(I doubt its related but asking anyways)
I build a room with the clown, I think it was described in the tutorial like this. Even if it was an empty room, I think the game maker would run an empty room, in other computers I saw it worked that way, I believe. That's why I am concerned.

Under file preferences is the load in fullscreen checked or unchecked?
Under resources game settings, sub tab windows, sub tab graphics is start in full screen checked or unchecked.

I think it is unchecked. I'm going to make sure now. Does it affects anything?

Btw, my computer is a Windows 7 64 bits.

Do you have it set to the windows target?
Sometimes my game maker changes the target to android by itself, it will go through the compile then do nothing.
Arxami Feb 15, 2013 @ 8:22am
Yeah, I made an executable and it didn't run either! When I clicked to run, an error message appear, saying that was something wrong with a .dll file, can't remember which one now though. Does something like this happened with someone else?
The fullscreen load is unchecked and the game is target to windows.

SOLVED-
Installed DirectX 9 from microsoft and it solved the problem.

I have this problem with a little twist: I'm using Windows 8 and Direct x 9 won't run on it. Any other option?
[GV-TA]AngruPingu Mar 10, 2013 @ 1:48pm
I downloaded an old version of DX9 and it didnt work. i have no idea what's going on. i was making a small game a few months ago, that worked fine, but this one wont. what the hell?
