Having issues with sound in the game...

So I was playing the game fine on my computer; using Steam Cloud saves.

But I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled everything. Now, when I try to boot up this game, I get errors:

cDirectInit::Init_SoundSystem()
ErrorCode:0x80040154

I assume this is because sound settings are stored in the save file, which is being retrieved from Steam Cloud. Is there a way I can fix my sound?

You have fully udpated sound drivers and Dirext X? Try installing this library: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=5555

Nope, didn't work. Have the most updated sound drivers and direct x, as well as the most recent version of C++.

Thats my problem right now just got pasted the DirectX problems finaly got the game to open and got this Error Code. I NEED ASSISTANCE

Here is my investigation : the Library doesn't fix the problem . I try to change the folder with a craked game . Weird sound is back but multiplayer is off, i can't join my friend party like i'm not connected to steam . After some manipulation, it appeared to me that the .exe is the problem. I tried to changed it with my friend's one but no change

It's saying you already have that version of the files installed. Um...I really have no other solution as it took me awhile to figure out how to get rid of this error as there's nothing on the net. My only other suggestion would be to go to the games install directory and go into the DirectX folder and run DXSETUP. I'm sorry I'm not able to help more.

I just bought this game, fresh install of Windows 8 with up-to-date drivers, directx, and C++ distros 2005, 2008, and 2010 installed. I am getting the exact same sound init error as the OP, and have found no way to resolve it as of yet. Anyone else having any luck?

Edit: I have noticed something peculiar. If I try to verify game cache, it always comes up with "1 file failed to validate". It downloads something miniscule, and then fails again if I try to validate it. Same sound error afterwards.

It will always show that error in this case. That's just the file that will cause the first time setup to run when you start up the game.
