edit: this game is also 3 years old and the company has moved onto other stuff...
(and you can't attack and hold the target so you have to use items)
With co-op I don;t think THIS game ,as designed would work. What I mean is, I think that let's say they ever did make a new one, a seperate coop campaign or gamemode designed around coop could work wonderfully. It wouldn't work locally,as you say you'll get in the way, but if the maps were large enough you could both do different objectives, say some sol, but some that need the coop, I think that could work brilliantly. But it would need to be designed that way from the start. Like the way Portal 2 coop works. I'd love it. I really hope they return to this title one day becasue it really is a remarkable stealth game.
