Local Co-op Beware!
In most cases "Local Co-op" means you play on your computer, your spouse (friend, co-op partner, whoever) plays on their computer and you connect through your local network.

Beware!

In this case, they mean that 2 people play on the SAME computer, which is called "Same Screen Co-Op"! Either both players squish together on a single keyboard (which is near impossible) or you need a Controller (XBox Controller for Windows compatible) or you need 2 Controllers. The game still does it's annoying split screen when both players stray too far from each other, which is why I didn't buy this on the console and thought Local Co-Op would solve this with each of us on our own PC.

I bought this game twice, one for myself and one for my spouse, thinking "Local Co-Op" meant Local Co-Op, not "Same Screen Co-Op." There is a difference, and it should be listed correctly. I feel a little decieved, but at least I bought both copies on sale so it was only 7.50 down the drain.

Hope this helps anybody else thinking of getting this game for it's Co-Op, like myself!

EDIT: Also, screw your misleading. clickbait title.

Back when this thread was made there was no "Local Area Network" or "LAN" store tag for games. I dunno why or how this thread got necro'd haha

No it doesn't. That's called multiplayer over lan. Local coop is playing on the same PC.

I'm sorry that things didn't go the way you expected but I thank you for sharing your experience. This answers a few questions I have about the game.

Good luck.

Would LOVE to know how to load the game in single player only mode....I always get a split screen with Player 1 binded to the keyboard and Player 2 binded to my Xbox 360 controller. (have tried re-loading game, starting up game with controller powered on etc...,).

I don't see any way to avoid the co-op? Ugh.

Most cases? You're gonna be disappointed often if you go by that when buying games on Steam.
"Co-Op" means Online/LAN play "Local Co-Op" means co-op locally on the same PC.

So much for playing that with my son. Wish i had known that before. Guess that was the first and last Lego game for me.

You can play using 2 gamepads or a gamepad and a keyboard, just run HDMI to your TV or set your second screen to duplicate and play away =)

When you get to the screen that has the press any key / button to continue thing at the bottom, you want to press the button with your controller, not your keyboard. The game should pickup that thats the primary input device you're wanting to use.

On top of that, try using Big Picture - I've found that games lean towards (in my case) the Xbox controller if you're in Big Picture. I think Steam passes along some command or sets the controller to a higher priority of input device than the keyboard + mouse, or it uses another magic. Either way games tend to work with controller better in Big Picture mode.

All my lego games (the complete star wars one, LotR, Marvel Super Heroes) work fine with the controller - in fact it works fine with both of them (Me and my sister played the Marvel Superheroes together a couple of times, using only one USB connector. The wireless controllers work as per with a Xbox - they assign themselves to slots one and two)

Its common for games to use that sort of intro screen to work out what device you want to use. If I press a key on the keyboard it uses that, else it uses the controller if I press a button on the controller.

No this is not correct - Thats known as just multiplayer. What you have described is a type of multiplayer - LAN.

Co-Op implies people working together (hence Cooperative gameplay). This means that games on Steam with the brand "Co-Op" are games where players can play together to do missions and other team-based activities, such as in Borderlands.

This is why Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare only has the multiplayer tag - While you're on the same team, players are never forced to rely on other teammates to do things when in multiplayer

To quote the wikipedia article on Cooperative gameplay

"Co-op gaming can operate either locally—with players sharing input devices or using multiple controllers connected to a single console—or over a network, with co-op players joining an existing game running on a game server via a local area networks or wide area networks"

Therefore local co-op is where players can play together in a cooperative way using only one machine or console, such as the case with the lego games

Hope that clears things up for people

No it doesn't...In the future, if you see local co-op then you should expect split-screen not multiplayer...

LOCAL means "NEXT TO". LAN means "LOCAL AREA NETWORK".

They couldn't possibly make it any easier to understand.

EDIT: Also, screw your misleading. clickbait title.

Wow, way to bring up crap from 4 years ago. And when I grew up, yes I'm old, "LOCAL CO-OP" used to mean on a LOCAL AREA NETWORK. This is before there was Steam and the Internet was mostly BBS's, Text, and CompuServ and AOL. So, yeah, I didn't know and I figured others didn't know, so I made a forum topic and if you read it you'll see it did help some people and it helped educate me on how terms are used these days (4 years ago). Which is what forums are used for, the passing of knowledge to each-other.

And how is the title click bait? My comment is exactly what the title says it is. Since you are so keen to correct someones misconceptions from 2013, maybe learn what click-bait actually means. Join us in learning from eachother.

I dumbed it down as much as I could. If you don't get it, that's on you, kid. Goodbye forever.

You only dumb it down for yourself. If you actually read the discussion, you would see the very first reply corrected me. 4 years later, you think this is still a problem? 4 years later?? Thank you for your crass, dumbed down, 4 years too late, reply. Calling someone who is clearly older and wiser than you a "kid" is just a feeble mind at work. Please spend the next 4 years learning and growing as a person. It will make the world and you and those you interact with better for it.

Please don't say it's "goodbye forever", a forum post is never a reason to want to leave forever. I hope you are not meaning to harm yourself. That is very serious, please don't do that. If you need to feel like you've won something, then okay, you've won. I am corrected, again. But, please don't harm yourself. Goodbye forever is as it implies a permenant solution to a temporary problem. Do I need to call someone for you to get help? Please, get help.
