Each player gets Battle Points (BP) while his units walk through the enemy's map. BP are the key to unlocking greater gold resources and greater power to attack. Without BP, a player gets nowhere; and with a steady supply of BP, he can gain strength almost exponentially. Therefore, the most critical skill a player needs is to acquire BP for himself, while at the same time denying it to his opponent.
How to do this? In a nutshell, send the most powerful waves of units you can, as often as you can, while killing the enemy's units as fast as possible. Each second they live means more resources for your opponent. Therefore, begin building your maze at the entry point of the map, and upgrade the towers right at the front to start dropping those units the moment they touch hexes. Begin with only arrow towers, until the enemy sends units with armor. Then, add some cannons.
There's a lot more to it than that, of course; the game is a balancing act, but the BP mechanic is the first thing you need to know, to shape your strategy.
There is a lot more advice to be had on the forums. This pinned post will hopefully point you to more detailed help: LINK
Mostly true. The Hammer and wind towers can be beneficial if used right, but the majority of the towers will best be the four main DPS ones.
