My impression
This game tries to be like a steampunk/post-apocalyptic Monkey Island. The plot is interesting, the world engaging, and I like the art style. The one place if fails is with the protagonist. Guybrush Threepwood is a lovable goofball idiot. Rufus is a self-centered jerk (Steam wouldn't let me post the word I wanted to use). I find myself not caring about his adventures at all, and almost hoping that he fails.

Well, he does fail, so I guess that made you happy, even though he sacrificed his dream willingly in the process and helped to save Deponia at his own expense. Who's the real jerk here!

Rofus is an awesome character because he's so self-centered and because of that, the story can proceed in such many ways. Daedalic doesn't make games with same personality and thank god for that because it's so special when the characters is so different like our "hero" Rofus.
play it to the end, i don't think you will regret it.

Agreed with the other comments: One of the main points of the game is his character progression (which continues through the sequel -- at least as far as I've played). It's nice to see a character who actually grows and becomes more moral with time and experience, in significant ways. Often, character progression in games is only slight, if at all. This shows his progression without betraying his character.

Yes, he's flawed, but deep down he's not a bad person. He is a jerk and an idiot, but that's partly due to traumatic circumstances (his father leaving him, him growing up in a world he hates and is unsympathetic to him), and when faced with important decisions he does come around. The change is nicely gradual though -- it takes a lot to change his mind instead of being an unrealistic 180 degree turn.

I've had a lot of fun with this game. I spotted it in the Winter sale and picked it up because of it's links with Monkey Island, I didn't think i'd really play it but it was too cheap to turn down.
But i downloaded it and had a go and found it's really quite enjoyable.

I like the art style and the way the game works and the world is quite a neat little place.

I can kind of understand where the OP is coming from with how rufus is not as good as guybrush and full of himself but i think this is part of his charm. For me he just wants to be loved and appreciated but acts the way he does to shield himself from everything. As LulieT says it's his progression thats interesting.

Everybody wants to be loved & all, those are not redeeming qualities.
He's a self-important jerk, and that makes it hard to identify with him.
I wish he had at least *some* redeeming quality, I think it would have made the game experience better.

I played through the first act of the game, and I gotta agree with the OP. The last time I saw a protagonist so hard to sympathize with, it was Bella Swan.

Yeah, he's kind of a 'wad, but it's really funny how the other characters are just so sarcastic to him and he takes a minute to get it.

*agrees with aforementioned comments* Rufus ftw!

I can understand why you don´t like Rufus. I guess hardly anyone would love someone who just makes trouble and will never work. But in his way Rufus is also kind of nice and as a game character it´s funny to play him
