A game that deserved the full release it was orignially intended to be, I am Alive is the PC equivalent of the Last of Us. The game starts out by throwing the player right into the thick of it. You will have to learn as you go that things are bad, really, really bad and only your own wits will help figure out how to survive. Supplies are very limited and making a choice of shooting some thugs versus avoiding them alltogether or giving up precious supplies to aid a civilian in need is always hard. In certain situations these sacrifices that you make will help out, but you never know if you will get anything in return. That is the beauty to the gameplay here, you make your own way to the destinations marked on your map as you discover where you need to go next and the choices you make result in either your survival or death, it is brutal and black and white.
You quickly learn to not trust your fellow man and getting creative with your combat is just part of the fun.
The story will hit home right off the bat and the ending will make you think, but the fetch quests to get to the end make the otherwise realistic feeling of the atmosphere fade and give way to the fact that you are playing a game. However, this everyman appraoch to the character is ultimately what you as the player make it to be and you have the choice to do or not do certain parts of this story quest. Thus making up for the prior shortcoming because you are given a canvas and a paintbrush.
The graphics leave a lot to be desired and you might be best served by applying mods the reduce the film grain and remove the BW filter from the game, but those are in place for atmospheric reasons and nail the point this game tries to et across. Leaving them on for the first playthrough is recommended.
As a package there is good replay value and you get a fun experience for your money. The lack of co-op or the ability to join or form factions in the single-player campaign is disheartening as this would have bolstered the experience but as a downloadable title this holds up really well without.
