First thing's first - don't let the mixed reviews scare you off.
I guess detrimental to its success was the fact that this game came out way before the whole survival/resource-management shtick came into fashion.
Despite what you may read, the game is pretty enjoyable. Granted, you shouldn't play the whole thing in one sitting. Also because it's fairly short. But considering it probably never was planned as one, nor was it given the budget to be a major release (and it shows), the end product turned out great imho.
The atmosphere and graphics are decent, the gameplay too. Yes, the camera rotation and player movement tend to hickup every now and then, but not in a 'deal-breaker' way.
Another thing I thoroughly enjoyed was that there wasn't 'one correct way' to get from A to B. Sure, when it came to getting from one quest location to another, the game is pretty linear, but at the locations themselves you can get into dead ends, so this will force the player to really think their actions through. Which is refreshing.
It is also refreshing, because the game WILL punish you if you are careless. Or reckless.
And it is very thorough in doing so.
Forget saving at will. You get checkpoints. And you get limited retry tokens. Stamina depleting during climbing also makes you reconsider the routes you take. None of that willy-nilly climbey monkey BS in Assassin's Creed. :P
Bullets? Limited. Arrows? Better strategize, because you need to draw it first and that gives your foes plenty of time to run up and butcher you.
The only thing I didn't really like was the lack of closure in the storyline. I mean, not to divulge any spoilers, but it really leaves the player thinking like it ended too soon. Like there's a chunk of the story we didn't get to see/play/experience. And that is a pity. Yet Ubisoft has obviously it's priorities and funds elsewhere.
Oh, and before I forget - best part? It DOESN'T use uplay.
TL;DR - MEAN every bullet, LOOK before you climb, micromanage to survive.
7 decent hours of fun if you're into survival sims.
